[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #98452] History for Attention John Halley

----------------------------------------------------------------
  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

I am working with Justin Tsu trying to compile MET with your patch. Met 8.1 compiles fine without the patch. After a clean compile, I did a make distclean. Then cp /users/ramos/interp_util.cc ./src/basic/vx_util/interp_util.cc

And ran ./configure again. It won't compile with the patch.

Greg,

Sorry to hear that. Since Justin told me he was using MET version 8.1,
I
made changes to the version of file interp_util.cc which lives in the
main_v8.1 branch in the MET repository.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dtcenter/MET/main_v8.1/met/src/basic/vx_util/interp_util.cc

That *should* be the same version of the file that exists on your
system.
But I suppose it is possible that it is not.

Do you still have the version of that file that does compile? If you
send
me that file, I could apply the same set of changes that Justin wants
to
that file and send it back to you.

Greg,

Its pretty deep in the library code to which most of the executables
link.
So technically they’d all be changed. But specifically Justin is
testing
the point-stat tool. He wanted to add some additional very detailed
log
messages about interpolating gridded data to point locations for
debugging
purposes.

Are you running into trouble? Would you like me to send you a fresh
tarball
that includes this change? Would that make it easier?

Thanks
John

Subject: Attention John Halley
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Sat Jan 30 13:16:04 2021

Greg,

OK, I just created a tarfile for the current contents of the
main_v8.1_interp_bilin branch on GitHub:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/tree/main_v8.1_interp_bilin/met

I posted the tarfile to our anonymous ftp site:
http://ftp.rap.ucar.edu/incoming/irap/met_help/ramos_data/met-
main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz

I did also test to confirm that this compiles fine on a local machine
using
the commands listed below. Just for reference, I also listed out the
environment variables I have set which impact this compilation.

MET_GSL=/d1/projects/MET/MET_releases/external_libs/gnu_6.3.0
MET_GRIB2C=/usr/local
MET_BUFR=/usr/local
MET_HDF5=/usr/local/hdf5-1.8.20
MET_NETCDF=/usr/local/netcdf-4.7.0/gcc-6.3.0
MET_HDFINC=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/include/hdf
MET_HDFLIB=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/lib
MET_HDFEOS=/usr/local/hdf-eos2-19v1
MET_CAIROINC=/usr/include/cairo
MET_CAIROLIB=/usr/lib
MET_FREETYPEINC=/usr/include/freetype2
MET_FREETYPELIB=/usr/lib
MET_PYTHON_CC=-I/usr/include/python2.7
-I/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/python2.7
MET_PYTHON_LD=-L/usr/lib/python2.7/config-x86_64-linux-gnu -L/usr/lib
-lpython2.7 -lpthread -ldl -lutil
MET_FONT_DIR=/d1/projects/MET/MET_test_data/unit_test/fonts

*tar -xvzf met-main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz*
*cd met-main_8.1_interp_bilin*
*./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-python --enable-
modis
--enable-mode_graphics --enable-lidar2nc*
*make install test >& make.log*

And testing the point_stat tool using the bilinear method, I was able
to
confirm the new log messages that Justin is looking for:

DEBUG 4: interp_bilin() -> obs(x,y) = (364.72994,189.04275)
DEBUG 4: SW (364,189) wgt, val = 0.258515, -2.93019
DEBUG 4: SE (365,189) wgt, val = 0.698735, -2.92614
DEBUG 4: NW (364,190) wgt, val = 0.011545, -2.93012
DEBUG 4: NE (365,190) wgt, val = 0.0312047, -2.92606
DEBUG 4: bilin_v = -2.92723

Thanks,
John

Greg, where are the executables?

Are they in /software/depot/met-8.1a-patched/met-
main_8.1_interp_bilin?
If so, I do not have permissions. I need to know where the
executables are so I can point my MET_BASE env variable to it

Greg,

OK, I just created a tarfile for the current contents of the
main_v8.1_interp_bilin branch on GitHub:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/tree/main_v8.1_interp_bilin/met

I posted the tarfile to our anonymous ftp site:
http://ftp.rap.ucar.edu/incoming/irap/met_help/ramos_data/met-
main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz

I did also test to confirm that this compiles fine on a local machine
using the commands listed below. Just for reference, I also listed out
the environment variables I have set which impact this compilation.

MET_GSL=/d1/projects/MET/MET_releases/external_libs/gnu_6.3.0
MET_GRIB2C=/usr/local
MET_BUFR=/usr/local
MET_HDF5=/usr/local/hdf5-1.8.20
MET_NETCDF=/usr/local/netcdf-4.7.0/gcc-6.3.0
MET_HDFINC=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/include/hdf
MET_HDFLIB=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/lib
MET_HDFEOS=/usr/local/hdf-eos2-19v1
MET_CAIROINC=/usr/include/cairo
MET_CAIROLIB=/usr/lib
MET_FREETYPEINC=/usr/include/freetype2
MET_FREETYPELIB=/usr/lib
MET_PYTHON_CC=-I/usr/include/python2.7
-I/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/python2.7
MET_PYTHON_LD=-L/usr/lib/python2.7/config-x86_64-linux-gnu -L/usr/lib
-lpython2.7 -lpthread -ldl -lutil
MET_FONT_DIR=/d1/projects/MET/MET_test_data/unit_test/fonts

*tar -xvzf met-main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz*
*cd met-main_8.1_interp_bilin*
*./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-python --enable-
modis --enable-mode_graphics --enable-lidar2nc* *make install test >&
make.log*

And testing the point_stat tool using the bilinear method, I was able
to confirm the new log messages that Justin is looking for:

DEBUG 4: interp_bilin() -> obs(x,y) = (364.72994,189.04275) DEBUG 4:
SW (364,189) wgt, val = 0.258515, -2.93019 DEBUG 4: SE (365,189) wgt,

bilin_v = -2.92723

Greg,

I did also test to confirm that this compiles fine on a local machine

MET_GSL=/d1/projects/MET/MET_releases/external_libs/gnu_6.3.0

*./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-python --enable-

And testing the point_stat tool using the bilinear method, I was able
to confirm the new log messages that Justin is looking for:

Subject: RE: [rt.rap.ucar.edu #98452] Attention John Halley
From: Tsu, Mr. Justin

John,

Can you shed some light onto this. From your new patch to point_stat:

104 DEBUG 4: interp_bilin() -> obs(x,y) = (65.64981,61.23906)
105 DEBUG 4: SW (65,61) wgt, val = 0.266476, 0
106 DEBUG 4: SE (66,61) wgt, val = 0.494463, 100
107 DEBUG 4: NW (65,62) wgt, val = 0.0837177, 0
108 DEBUG 4: NE (66,62) wgt, val = 0.155343, 100

This is looking at an observation located at (ii,jj) =
(65.64981,61.23906) and then printing out the weights from the four
vertices. The weights don't make sense because I was expecting them
to be 0.64981, 1-0.64981, 0.23906, and 1-0.23906. Can you tell me
how these weights are calculated because the weights I just listed are
used in the NRL verify program and I believe this to be the reason why
our interpolated forecast fields differ.

Thanks,
Justin

OK, I was aable to grab it. Thanks. I will work on it later.

Greg,

OK, I just created a tarfile for the current contents of the
main_v8.1_interp_bilin branch on GitHub:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/tree/main_v8.1_interp_bilin/met

I posted the tarfile to our anonymous ftp site:
http://ftp.rap.ucar.edu/incoming/irap/met_help/ramos_data/met-
main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz

I did also test to confirm that this compiles fine on a local machine
using the commands listed below. Just for reference, I also listed out
the environment variables I have set which impact this compilation.

MET_GSL=/d1/projects/MET/MET_releases/external_libs/gnu_6.3.0
MET_GRIB2C=/usr/local
MET_BUFR=/usr/local
MET_HDF5=/usr/local/hdf5-1.8.20
MET_NETCDF=/usr/local/netcdf-4.7.0/gcc-6.3.0
MET_HDFINC=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/include/hdf
MET_HDFLIB=/usr/local/hdf4-4.2.13/lib
MET_HDFEOS=/usr/local/hdf-eos2-19v1
MET_CAIROINC=/usr/include/cairo
MET_CAIROLIB=/usr/lib
MET_FREETYPEINC=/usr/include/freetype2
MET_FREETYPELIB=/usr/lib
MET_PYTHON_CC=-I/usr/include/python2.7
-I/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/python2.7
MET_PYTHON_LD=-L/usr/lib/python2.7/config-x86_64-linux-gnu -L/usr/lib
-lpython2.7 -lpthread -ldl -lutil
MET_FONT_DIR=/d1/projects/MET/MET_test_data/unit_test/fonts

*tar -xvzf met-main_8.1_interp_bilin.20210130.tar.gz*
*cd met-main_8.1_interp_bilin*
*./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-python --enable-
modis --enable-mode_graphics --enable-lidar2nc* *make install test >&
make.log*

And testing the point_stat tool using the bilinear method, I was able
to confirm the new log messages that Justin is looking for:

DEBUG 4: interp_bilin() -> obs(x,y) = (364.72994,189.04275) DEBUG 4:
SW (364,189) wgt, val = 0.258515, -2.93019 DEBUG 4: SE (365,189) wgt,

Thanks,
John

Justin,

Great, glad we're narrowing in on the source of the difference. Here's
where those weights are computed:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/blob/0fe2e42609120df236f74ae23c07f3fa4b930247/met/src/basic/vx_util/interp_util.cc#L763

(x, y) is the lower-left corner of the gridbox containing that point.

*   // Compute dx and dy   dx = obs_x - x;*
*   dy = obs_y - y;*

* // Compute weights for 4 corner points*

*   wtsw = (1.0-dx) * (1.0-dy);   wtse = dx * (1.0-dy);   wtnw = (1.0-
dx) *
dy; wtne = dx * dy;*
*...*

*         bilin_v = wtsw * dp.get(x,   y)   +                   wtse *
dp.get(x+1, y)   +                   wtnw * dp.get(x,   y+1) +
     wtne * dp.get(x+1, y+1);*

Perhaps there's a bug somewhere in here?

Justin,

I see you sent another email to met-help, but I see what happened... I
did
reply to your question about interpolation weights at 12:03 PM MST
today,
but you weren't actually on that ticket. Greg was listed as the only
requestor. So I just added you to that ticket and am resending my
response
below. I'll just delete that new ticket from earlier today and stick
with
this one.

Thanks,
John
