[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #98554] History for Multiple Levels in Series Anal

Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
I am running series_analysis on grib files that have multiple levels in them. In my configuration file, I specify two levels as the MET documentation implies. When I run it I get a netcdf file that seems to only have one level in it. The header of the NetCDF file is attached. It has my two stat variables but doesn't seem to have more than on level. If I select mulitple levels, is it combining my two levels into one number? I can send the NetCDF file if needed.
Thanks

Bob,
Can you take a step back and tell me how you are trying to define this
series?
Do you want to define a "height" series or a "time" series?
For a height series, you'd define multiple levels to be extracted from
a
SINGLE forecast and analysis file. The resulting statistics for each
grid
point would be computing over all pressure levels you define in your
config
file.
For a time series, you'd define a SINGLE field in the config file to
be
extracted from MANY forecast and analysis files. This is by far the
most
common way that series-analysis is run... but both types are possible.
So which are you trying to do?
Thanks,
John Halley Gotway

I am doing a timeseries for winds at several levels. So, from what
you said about timeseries, I think we can only specify one level at a
time and my NetCDF file will only have one level into. Is that the
correct interpetation?
Thanks
Bob

Bob,
Yes, that's right. The series_analysis tool computes statistics for a
single series in each run. So you define a single name/level, extract
that
from each of the input files and compute the stats separately for each
grid
point.
Presumably, the logic could be enhanced to process multiple series in
each
run. But for a tool that's pretty memory intensive, that could lead to
memory trouble.
Since you passed in 2 fields and multiple input files, we probably
should
have printed a useful warning or error message about what's going on.

Actually, from what you said, since I passed in two levels, I was
getting a combination stat made up of those two levels. That will be
useful for other tasks.
Thanks
Bob

Bob,
Please look closely at the log messages printed to the screen.
DEBUG 1: Length of configuration "fcst.field" = 1
DEBUG 1: Length of configuration "obs.field" = 1
DEBUG 1: Length of forecast file list = 7
DEBUG 1: Length of observation file list = 7
DEBUG 1: Series defined by the forecast file list of length 7.
These log messages tell you HOW the series is defined for your run and
should be useful in figuring out what series-analysis is doing. In
this
example, I'm extracting 1 field from a time series of input datasets.
So
the series is defined by the file list of length 7.
Sounds like you understand how to run series-analysis, so I'll go
ahead and
resolve this ticket.
Thanks,
John
