----------------------------------------------------------------
  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,
I am running the feature-relative use-case, trying to process multiple
pressure levels for the same variable (setting the config variable:
BOTH_VAR1_LEVELS = P850, P700, ...).  I am running under
 /glade/u/home/nleonardo/METplus_Tutorial/ATTEMPT001,
with metplus/4.0.0-beta3, met/10.0.0-beta3, python/3.7.9, netcdf/4.7.4, and
all other required modules. I enter the command: master_metplus.py -c
${METPLUS_TUTORIAL_DIR}/tutorial.conf -c
${METPLUS_TUTORIAL_DIR}/ATTEMPT001/v2_NEW_SeriesANL_FeatureRel_fcstGFS.conf
-c
dir.OUTPUT_BASE=${METPLUS_TUTORIAL_DIR}/ATTEMPT001/output/feature_relative_by_init;

The program fails and produces the following error:

terminate called after throwing an instance of
'netCDF::exceptions::NcNameInUse'
what(): NetCDF: String match to name in use
file: ncGroup.cpp line:496
03/16 18:04:10.778 metplus (command_builder.py:166) ERROR:

I've also attached the full log. Thank you.

Hi Nicholas -
Thanks for letting us know about this error.
The issue seems to be at the METplus level invoking the name="RH"
twice.
Let me forward this to the METplus group and see what they say ...
Hank - could you or George confirm this issue and look for a
resolution?
thanks,
David

Hi Nicholas,

I wanted to let you know that I am looking into this issue. It looks
like
processing 2 fields with the same name on different levels is not
currently
supported in this use case, but I am looking into solutions to make
this
possible. I will follow up when I have a fix in place that you can use
to
test.

Thanks,
George

Hi Nick,

I apologize for the delay again. The changes have taken longer than I
had
expected, but I am very close. I am hoping to have it finished on
Monday,
but the changes may already work for your use case. To get it to work,
you
will need to obtain the branch of the METplus repository called
"feature_852_series_by_same_name" and replace the
BOTH_VAR1_NAME/LEVELS
variables with:

BOTH_EXTRACT_TILES_VAR1_NAME = RH
BOTH_EXTRACT_TILES_VAR1_LEVELS = P850, P700

BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_NAME = RH_P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_LEVELS = P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_NAME = RH_P700
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_LEVELS = P700

I made changes to check if there are duplicate field names when
running
regrid_data_plane and combine the name and level to prevent an error.
I
also added support for specifying an output name for each name/level.
I
prefer to be more explicit, so I would recommend setting the following
instead:

BOTH_EXTRACT_TILES_VAR1_NAME = RH
BOTH_EXTRACT_TILES_VAR1_LEVELS = P850, P700
BOTH_EXTRACT_TILES_VAR1_OUTPUT_NAMES = RH_P850, RH_P700

BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_NAME = RH_P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_LEVELS = P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_NAME = RH_P700
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_LEVELS = P700

This also allows you to change the ExtractTiles output names and
SeriesAnalysis input names to something else if you prefer, like
RH_850mb
and RH_700mb.

You will also need to set the INPUT_BASE and MET_INSTALL_DIR variables
in
the METplus config to the same values that are used in the version of
METplus that you used before.

Let me know if you have issues getting that set up and/or if there are
still bugs that need to be worked out and I will take care of it on
Monday.

Thanks,
George

Subject: Error loading multiple levels

Hi Nick,

Just following up on this ticket. We tested the changes and have
merged
them into our develop branch. You can use that branch to test, or you
can
wait until the METplus wrappers 4.0.0-beta5 release has been created
and
installed if you would prefer that. I believe we are planning on
cutting
the release this week.

I previously forgot to mention that you will likely want to change the
SeriesAnalysis output template so that it does not include the level
since
the field name will include the level. If your value looks something
like
this:

SERIES_ANALYSIS_OUTPUT_TEMPLATE =
{label}/series_F{fcst_beg}_{fcst_name}_{fcst_level}.nc

then you can change it to:

SERIES_ANALYSIS_OUTPUT_TEMPLATE =
{label}/series_F{fcst_beg}_{fcst_name}.nc

Let me know if you have any questions or issues getting this to work.

Thanks,
George

Hello George,
Sorry for the late reply. I had to work on other calculations
involving
MET. I'd otherwise have waited for beta5.0, but I just tried
adding/replacing the flags you mentioned and immediately got an error
message saying:

04/20 13:15:06.369 metplus (command_builder.py:166) ERROR:
(series_analysis_wrapper.py:199) No fields specified. Please set
[FCST/OBS]_VAR<n>_[NAME/LEVELS]
04/20 13:15:06.371 metplus.SeriesAnalysis (met_util.py:180) ERROR:
SeriesAnalysis was not initialized properly.

Then again, you mentioned that I first needed to obtain the branch of
the
METplus repository called "feature_852_series_by_same_name". How do I
do
that (specify some path in the .config file)?

Also, I'm still using ".../10.0.0-beta3" for MET and
".../METplus-4.0.0-beta3" for METplus. Do I need to revert back to
older
version(s) for this to work, like 9.1.1? Thank you.
-Nick

Subject: Error loading multiple levels
From: George McCabe

Hi Nick,

Those config changes will not work on METplus 4.0.0-beta3, but it
should
work using MET 10.0.0-beta3. The branch I mentioned before no longer
exists
because the changes have been merged into the develop branch.

I set up a develop version of METplus on cheyenne that you can use to
test.
Instead of calling the version of master_metplus.py in your
environment,
run_metplus.py in this directory, followed by the config arguments you
usually pass to master_metplus.py, i.e.

/glade/u/home/mccabe/METplus.develop/ush/run_metplus.py confi1.conf
user.conf

This version is configured to use MET 10.0.0-beta3. Let me know if you
have
any issues running it.

Thanks,
George

Subject: Error loading multiple levels
From: Nicholas Leonardo

Hello Geoge,
I tried the command:

/glade/u/home/mccabe/METplus.develop/ush/run_metplus.py -c
/glade/u/home/nleonardo/METplus_Tutorial/ATTEMPT001/V4_NEW_SeriesANL_FeatureRel_MULTlayer_GFSvECanl.conf
-c /glade/u/home/nleonardo/METplus_Tutorial/tutorial.conf

but still get the same error:

04/20 14:09:59.370 metplus (command_builder.py:251) ERROR:
(series_analysis_wrapper.py:222) No fields specified. Please set
[FCST/OBS]_VAR<n>_[NAME/LEVELS]
04/20 14:09:59.372 metplus.SeriesAnalysis (met_util.py:147) ERROR:
SeriesAnalysis was not initialized properly

Was I supposed to keep (not replace) the flags
"BOTH_VAR1_NAME/LEVELS"?

I'm running everything under
/glade/u/home/nleonardo/METplus_Tutorial/ATTEMPT001/. Incidentally, I
had
previously made some changes to the config file, though I don't think
they
are the culprits. That is, I made changes so that I use the ECMWF
analysis
as the verifying dataset and extract the UGRD wind (as a test) instead
(given RH is not available in ECMWF). Thank you.
-Nick

Subject: Error loading multiple levels

Hi Nick,

You were supposed to replace them, but it looks like you have a space
after
BOTH_ in your config file on lines 39-42:

BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_NAME = UGRD_P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR1_LEVELS = P850
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_NAME = UGRD_P700
BOTH_ SERIES_ANALYSIS_VAR2_LEVELS = P700
