  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

I am having trouble getting Point2Grid working on my data to input into MET. I have point data that I successfully converted from Ascii to netCDF using the ASCII2NC tool. Now I am trying to grid that data using Point2Grid. I am calling point2grid using the following:

point2grid \
   /zdata2/rgonzalez/gpm_matchup/hrrr/2018/01/01/hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim.nc \
G110 \
   /zdata2/rgonzalez/gpm_matchup/hrrr/2018/01/01/hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim_gridded.nc \
   -field 'name="obs_val"; level="(*)";’ \
   -v 2

I am getting the following error when calling this:
DEBUG 2: Output grid: Projection: Lat/Lon Nx: 464 Ny: 224 lat_ll: 25.062 lon_ll: 124.938 delta_lat: 0.125 delta_lon: 0.125
DEBUG 2: Interpolation options: method = UW_MEAN, vld_thresh = 0.5
DEBUG 1: Reading data file: /zdata2/rgonzalez/gpm_matchup/hrrr/2018/01/01/hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim.nc
ERROR  :
ERROR : process_point_file() -> The variable "obs_val" exists but is not a valid field name.
ERROR : Try setting the "name" in the "-field" command line option to one of the available names:
ERROR  : -9999
ERROR  :

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Ryan

Hi Ryan.

I see you're having some trouble with Point2Grid.

Could you please tell me what version of MET you are using?

Could you also please send the sample data files you're using by
posting
them to our anonymous ftp site, following these instructions so we can
take
a look?

Subject: Error with Point2Grid in MET
From: Julie Prestopnik
Time: Wed Apr 07 08:48:36 2021

Hi Ryan.

Thanks for sending your data.

I see in the netCDF file that the value for "obs_var" is "-9999":

>  obs_var =
>   "-9999" ;

whereas we expect "obs_var" to be a variable name:

>  char obs_var(obs_var_num, mxstr2) ;
> obs_var:long_name = "variable names" ;

For example something like:

> obs_var =
>   "TMP",
>   "HGT",
> }

The "field" name would hold the value of "obs_val", in this case "-
9999".
When I try setting "-field 'name="-9999";'" as this error message
indicates:

> ERROR  : process_point_file() -> The variable "obs_val" exists but
is not
> a valid field name.
> ERROR : Try setting the "name" in the "-field" command line option
to one
> of the available names:
> ERROR  : -9999

I see that the "-9999" is not considered a valid name:

> DEBUG 1: Reading data file: hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim.nc
> terminate called after throwing an instance of
> 'netCDF::exceptions::NcBadName'
> what(): NetCDF: Name contains illegal characters

Could you please check on the values in the ASCII file that you ran
ASCII2NC on? If you need to check on the format of the 11 column
ASCII
format you can view our documentation for that tool here:
https://met.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Users_Guide/reformat_point.html#ascii2nc-
tool

Hopefully, if we can get a valid name in there from the ASCII2NC
output,
point2grid will run well for you. I hope that helps. Please let us
know
how it goes.

Hello,

I am having trouble getting Point2Grid working on my data to input
into
MET. I have point data that I successfully converted from Ascii to
netCDF
using the ASCII2NC tool. Now I am trying to grid that data using
Point2Grid. I am calling point2grid using the following:

point2grid \

/zdata2/rgonzalez/gpm_matchup/hrrr/2018/01/01/hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim.nc
\
G110 \

/zdata2/rgonzalez/gpm_matchup/hrrr/2018/01/01/hrrr_gmi_20180101_021847_10V_sim_
gridded.nc \
 -field 'name="obs_val"; level="(*)";’ \
 -v 2

I am getting the following error when calling this:
