  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

John Halley Gotway is creating this ticket for Binyu Wang. When Binyu attempted to load MET's VCNT output into METviewer she got the attached warning and error messages.

This log was pulled from the Mars machine of WCOSS:

cd /gpfs/dell2/emc/modeling/noscrub/Binyu.Wang/MET/METviewer_AWS/g2g
run_g2g_met_verf_wdir.sh > log

Tatiana, please investigate and advise.

Thanks,
John

Hi Binyu,
Could you send me one of your .stat files that were part of the error
message:
/point_stat_120000L_20200217_120000V.stat
point_stat_120000L_20200221_120000V.stat
point_stat_120000L_20200212_120000V.stat

Which script (METviewer instance) did you use to load the data?

Thanks,
Tatiana

Hello Tatiana,
The *stat files are under:

/gpfs/dell2/emc/modeling/noscrub/Binyu.Wang/MET/stat_wdir/met_uwyo_wdir/SA

The script to upload file is:

/gpfs/dell2/emc/modeling/noscrub/Binyu.Wang/MET/METviewer_AWS/g2g/
run_g2g_met_verf_wdir.sh

Thank you for your help.

Binyu
I don't have access to NOAA servers.
It would be better if you attache files to this issue.

Binyu,

Attached .stat file is not a standard MET output stat file. It is
missing a lot of columns in the beginning:
VERSION MODEL DESC FCST_LEAD FCST_VALID_BEG FCST_VALID_END OBS_LEAD
OBS_VALID_BEG OBS_VALID_END FCST_VAR FCST_UNITS
METviewer can't load a file like this.

Hello Tatiana,

It seems the *stat file was not attached correctly in my previous
email,
here is the complete one. Sorry for that.

The new file is still invalid. Not sure if it was not attached
correctly again or there are other reasons.
It looks like there are no line breaks between the 1st line with the
header and the 2nd line with data. Some other data lines don't have
line brakes either:

Subject: METviewer error loading VCNT output
From: Tatiana Burek
Time: Fri Aug 07 12:02:53 2020

The file that you sent is generated by MET 9.1
CNT line type in 9.1 has 3 new columns. You use METviewer 3.0 that
doesn't support 9.1 output format and that is why you got those
errors.

After MET 9.1 is officially released we will release METviewer 3.1
that supports a new format.
We also have METviewer 3.1-beta running on AWS. This version can work
with 9.1 formats also.
To use it you need to create a new database with
mv_dev_create_db_on_aws.sh and then load data to this database with
mv_dev_load_to_aws.sh
...Or wait for the official METviewer 3.1 release.

Thank you, Tatiana.

By the way, what kind of plots could be made using CNT line? I am not
sure
how to use that for wind profile verification.

Subject: METviewer error loading VCNT output
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Tue Aug 11 16:12:55 2020

Hi Binyu,

The CNT line type contains continuous statistics, like Mean Error
(ME),
Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), and Root Mean
Squared
Error (RMSE), as well as several others. Here's a link to our newly
updated
met-9.1 documentation:
https://ncar.github.io/MET/Users_Guide/point-stat.html#id10

There are many ways these stats can be visualized in METviewer. The
most
common is done using the "Series" plot type... drawing lines on the
plot.
But those stats can also be displayed via Box, Bar, and Contour plot
types.

It really isn't realistic to train you on the use of METviewer via
met-help. Instead, I'd recommend asking co-workers (like Mallory Row,
Perry
Shafran, Binbin Zhou, and Logan Dawson) to share examples of their
plotting. If you have specific questions about a particular plot,
please
send us your XML file. And if you have many questions, perhaps we
should
schedule a time for a remote work session.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
John
