I loaded the .stat files into the DB for 3 different models which were
produced by Point-Stat. I used one fcst file and one obs file for each model
to run Point-Stat. I used the HiRA tool in Point-Stat and specified several
thresholds and neighborhood widths which successfully generated the RPS and
ECNT output files. On loading the .stat files into the DB, it flagged the
RPS line type as being unexpected. I successfully plotted the all PSTC
statistics (Y dep vrbl) which were available for 3 models (Y series vrbls)
for several interp_points and for several fcst_thresh values (ind vrbls).
The issues which resulted in "No image available" were as follows:

	1. Can plot RMSE Y dep vrbl (summary statistic) for one lead time
(ind vrbl), but when I try plotting for several interp_pnts (ind vrbl) it
only plots the RMSE for 4 interp points and no others despite selecting them
all. All interp_points values were listed along the x-axis of the plot.
	2. Unable to plot the summary stat ECNT_RMSE (Y dep vrbl) for one
lead time (ind vrbl) for several interp_pnts and fcst_thresh values
	3. Ditto the results in #2 for all ECNT statistics.
	4. Unable to plot RPS statistics as they did not load (unexpected
statistic)

Do you have any suggestions for things to look for in setting up the plot
which I might have overlooked and which might have caused the above issues?

Thanks.

Hi John,
#4 We start support RPS line type in METviewer starting from v3.0. You
need to update your METviewer instance in order to use it.

#1. It is difficult for me to explain why METviwer doesn't plot all
interp_pnts without seeing the data. The simple explanation - you
probably don't have any data to display.

#2,3. All stats that start from ECNT_ can only be plotted as an
aggregation of lines. It means you need to select Aggregation
statistics -> Ensemble Continuous Statistics (ECNT). Also to calculate
this stat you need data in ECNT table ( ECNT line type).

Thanks for your inputs on the possible causes for the issues.

I certainly plan to upgrade METViewer, but will wait until the work
situation for my system admin person and myself returns to normal.

For #1, yours is a valid point (no RMSE data). I will look in the
.stat file to see if the only RMSE data I had was for interp_pnts = 4

For #2,3, I checked the .stat file and it contains the ECNT line type.
I'll retry the plot using Aggregation statistics per your suggestion.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on the results of my
testing. I tried to plot ECNT_RMSE using aggregation of the ECNT line
type vice summary statistics. I tried to plot ECNT_RMSE as a function
of interp_points for 3 different models but I'm getting "no image
available" with a pop-up which shows a plot filename. See attached
image. I exported the plot XML which is also attached. I looked at the
.stat file and it contains the ECNT line type.

Hi John
I still think that you don't have data in the database.
Could you run a plot one more time and when it is done look at the log
messages in the 'Log' tab.
Or if you have an access to the server's file system, find a file with
the messages:
/opt/tomcat7/webapps/metviewer_output/xml/plot_<plot_number>.log

Could you send this output to me?

Can you access the data in your database?
mysql -u <user_name> -p <pwd> mv_HiRA

If you do, could you get MySQl query from 'SQL' tab or from file:
/opt/tomcat7/webapps/metviewer_output/xml/plot_<plot_number>.sql
and run this query in the console.
Do you get data?

Tatiana

Tatiana -

I've attached the log file was generated after I regenerated the plot.

When I accessed the mv_HiRA database, I received a lot of screen
dialog. See attached text file.

Used the MySQL query obtained from the SQL tab which generated the
response in the attached txt file.

John

and reconnecting may take a longer time. Disable
with
                      --disable-auto-rehash.
(Defaults to on; use --skip-auto-rehash to
disable.)
  -A, --no-auto-rehash
No automatic rehashing. One has to use 'rehash'
to get
table and field completion. This gives a quicker
start of
mysql and disables rehashing on reconnect.
  --auto-vertical-output
Automatically switch to vertical output mode if
the
result is wider than the terminal width.
-B, --batch Don't use history file. Disable interactive
behavior.
                      (Enables --silent.)

enable
                      with --comments.
-C, --compress Use compression in server/client protocol.
-#, --debug[=#] This is a non-debug version. Catch this and
exit.

                      Set the default character set.
  --delimiter=name Delimiter to be used.
-e, --execute=name Execute command and quit. (Disables --force and
history
                      file.)
-E, --vertical Print the output of a query (rows) vertically.
-f, --force Continue even if we get an SQL error. Sets
                      abort-source-on-error to 0
  -G, --named-commands
Enable named commands. Named commands mean this
program's
internal commands; see mysql> help . When
enabled, the
named commands can be used from any line of the
query,
otherwise only from the first line, before an
enter.
                      Disable with --disable-named-commands. This
option is
                      disabled by default.
-i, --ignore-spaces Ignore space after function names.
--init-command=name SQL Command to execute when connecting to MySQL
server.
                      Will automatically be re-executed when
reconnecting.

-n, --unbuffered Flush buffer after each query.
--column-names Write column names in results.
(Defaults to on; use --skip-column-names to
disable.)
  -N, --skip-column-names
Don't write column names in results.
  --sigint-ignore Ignore SIGINT (CTRL-C).
-o, --one-database Ignore statements except those that occur while
the
default database is the one named at the command
line.
--pager[=name] Pager to use to display results. If you don't
supply an
option, the default pager is taken from your ENV
variable
PAGER. Valid pagers are less, more, cat [>
filename],
etc. See interactive help (\h) also. This option
does not
work in batch mode. Disable with --disable-
pager. This
                      option is disabled by default.
  -p, --password[=name]
Password to use when connecting to server. If
password is
not given it's asked from the tty.
-P, --port=# Port number to use for connection or 0 for
default to, in
                      order of preference, my.cnf, $MYSQL_TCP_PORT,
                      /etc/services, built-in default (3306).
--progress-reports Get progress reports for long running commands
(like
                      ALTER TABLE)
(Defaults to on; use --skip-progress-reports to
disable.)
--prompt=name Set the mysql prompt to this value.
--protocol=name The protocol to use for connection (tcp, socket,
pipe,
                      memory).
-q, --quick Don't cache result, print it row by row. This
may slow
down the server if the output is suspended.
Doesn't use
                      history file.
-r, --raw Write fields without conversion. Used with
--batch.
--reconnect Reconnect if the connection is lost. Disable
with
--disable-reconnect. This option is enabled by
default.
(Defaults to on; use --skip-reconnect to
disable.)
-s, --silent Be more silent. Print results with a tab as
separator,
                      each row on new line.
-S, --socket=name The socket file to use for connection.
--ssl Enable SSL for connection (automatically enabled
with
                      other flags).
--ssl-ca=name CA file in PEM format (check OpenSSL docs,
implies
                      --ssl).
--ssl-capath=name CA directory (check OpenSSL docs, implies
--ssl).
--ssl-cert=name X509 cert in PEM format (implies --ssl).
--ssl-cipher=name SSL cipher to use (implies --ssl).

  --ssl-verify-server-cert
Verify server's "Common Name" in its cert
against
hostname used when connecting. This option is
disabled by
                      default.
-t, --table Output in table format.
--tee=name Append everything into outfile. See interactive
help (\h)
also. Does not work in batch mode. Disable with
--disable-tee. This option is disabled by
default.
-u, --user=name User for login if not current user.
-U, --safe-updates Only allow UPDATE and DELETE that uses keys.
  -U, --i-am-a-dummy Synonym for option --safe-updates, -U.
-v, --verbose Write more. (-v -v -v gives the table output
format).
-V, --version Output version information and exit.
-w, --wait Wait and retry if connection is down.
--connect-timeout=# Number of seconds before connection timeout.
  --max-allowed-packet=#
The maximum packet length to send to or receive
from
                      server.
  --net-buffer-length=#
The buffer size for TCP/IP and socket
communication.
--select-limit=# Automatic limit for SELECT when using --safe-
updates.
--max-join-size=# Automatic limit for rows in a join when using
                      --safe-updates.
--secure-auth Refuse client connecting to server if it uses
old
                      (pre-4.1.1) protocol.
--server-arg=name Send embedded server this as a parameter.
--show-warnings Show warnings after every statement.
  --plugin-dir=name Directory for client-side plugins.
--default-auth=name Default authentication client-side plugin to
use.
--binary-mode By default, ASCII '\0' is disallowed and '\r\n'
is
translated to '\n'. This switch turns off both
features,
and also turns off parsing of all clientcommands
except
\C and DELIMITER, in non-interactive mode (for
input
piped to mysql or loaded using the 'source'
command).
This is necessary when processing output from
mysqlbinlog
                      that may contain blobs.

John
In you log file I see an error about missing gsl library.
As I remember we were talking about this problem in the past.

Error: package or namespace load failed for ‘gsl’ in dyn.load(file,
DLLpath = DLLpath, ...):
unable to load shared object '/home/jraby/R-
3.6.1/library/gsl/libs/gsl.so':

You need to correctly install ‘gsl’ or try to comment it out in
/opt/tomcat7/webapps/metviewer/R_work/include/agg_stat.R
#library(gsl);

Tatiana

Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't realized that gsl has somehow
gone sour since we had it running fine beginning 21 MAY. I know that I
was able to generate aggregated plots (which requires gsl) back on 19
JUN , so something happened after that. I'll get with my system admin
to track down the failure. I guess the lesson learned is to check the
log file which I'll try to do in the future.

In you log file I see an error about missing gsl library.
As I remember we were talking about this problem in the past.

Error: package or namespace load failed for ‘gsl’ in dyn.load(file,
DLLpath = DLLpath, ...):
unable to load shared object '/home/jraby/R-
3.6.1/library/gsl/libs/gsl.so':

You need to correctly install ‘gsl’ or try to comment it out in
/opt/tomcat7/webapps/metviewer/R_work/include/agg_stat.R
#library(gsl);

My system admin tech is Rey Armendarez and I cc'd him on this email.
He would like to ask you some questions about GSL. We have GSL
installed as well as the R package for GSL. Just need to discuss the
environment settings, etc. He will be in touch soon. Perhaps one
possible course of action to consider would be to install the updated
version of METviewer since Rey would be the one to work the
installation from this end. I'll let Rey decide based on his
assessment and your feedback.

Thanks.

Rey Armendarez fixed the problem which had temporarily prevented gsl
from working. A recent upgrade to Tomcat was detected and when Rey
reverted back to the previous version, I was able to generate the
ECNT_RMSE plot.

Rey is investigating how we can upgrade to the new Tomcat version and
maintain the gsl functionality because sooner or later, we will be
forced to upgrade it due higher system admin authority requiring it.
Rey is also planning on installing the newest METViewer version too,
but I need to complete some plotting perhaps before this happens over
the next couple of months.

Thanks for your assistance in troubleshooting this issue.
