  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear MET helpdesk,
I have been using mtd for the past few months on Cheyenne, but it seems it is
not working anymore.
When I type: mtd -single wrf_file_list_2008 -config MTDConfig_r0t05v300 -outdir
mtd_out/. -log run_mtd.log -v 3
The response is:cd: Too many arguments.
Before I run the mtd command, I have loaded:module use
/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/modulefilesmodule load met/8.0module load
python/2.7.14ncar_pylib
It seems mtd is not recognized. Do you know what's the problem? Thank you very
much!
Best regards,Yuxing

Hi Yuxing.

I see that you are having trouble running mtd on Cheyenne. Could you
please send me the paths to your files so that I can try to recreate
the
problem you are experiencing?

Thanks!

Hi Yuxing.

Actually, I may be able to access your data through Casper and test
there,
however, I am unable to access your data due to a permissions issue:

casper01:jpresto> ls /glade/work/yunyx/Analysis/MODE/test
>
> ls: cannot access /glade/work/yunyx/Analysis/MODE/test: Permission
denied
>

Could you please open read permissions recursively in that directory
for me
so that I can access your data?

My apologies for the delayed response. I intended to look into this
yesterday, but was unable to. I tried to work on it this morning,
but
discovered that Casper is down. I thought we would have service
restored
by now, but that is not the case. I hope the issues with Casper will
be
resolved soon. I will follow up as soon as I am able.

Hi Yuxing. I am able to access Casper now, but unfortunately I still
do
not have permission (see details of attempts below). I can only see
in
this directory "/glade/work/yunyx/", which is enough to see that the
permissions on "Analysis" are only visible by you. I believe if you
run
the following it should allow me read access at Analysis and below
recursively:

cd /glade/work/yunyx

chmod -R g+r Analysis

Please give that a try and then let me know, and I'll try to access
the
data again.

Subject: mtd not working on cheyenne
From: Julie Prestopnik

Hi Yuxing. Thank you for opening up the permissions on your
directories.
I am now able to read the data. I copied over your data
into /glade/p/ral/jntp/jpresto/met_help/yuxing_20200710/. I noticed
that
met-8.0 was not on Casper. Versions 8.1 and 9.0.3 were available on
Casper, so I tested with both of those.

Testing with 8.1, I ran the following, as you did with 8.0:

> module use /glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/modulefiles
> module load met/8.1
> module load python/2.7.14
> ncar_pylib

I copied over your wrf_file_list_2008 (and renamed
it wrf_file_list_2008_mod). I modified the file to list the full path
to
the files. So, instead of
"wrfout_met/2008/wrf2d_d01_APCP_01_2008050100.nc", for example, it
says
"/glade/work/yunyx/Analysis/MODE/test/wrfout_met/2008/wrf2d_d01_APCP_01_2008050100.nc".
I copied over your MTDConfig_r0t05v300 file and first, changed the
version
to "V8.1" and later to "V9.0.3".

For 8.1, I modified the command slightly, adding a "./" in front of
"mtd_out/." and pushing the output to a file, mtd_output.log:

> mtd -single wrf_file_list_2008_mod -config MTDConfig_r0t05v300
-outdir
> ./mtd_out/. -log run_mtd.log -v 3 >& mtd_output.log

The code started running and I did not receive the error "cd: Too many
arguments.".

Wondering if the changes I had made played a role in not getting the
error
that you got, I decided to copy over the data in
/glade/work/yunyx/Analysis/MODE/test/wrfout_met/2008/
to /glade/p/ral/jntp/jpresto/met_help/yuxing_20200710/wrfout_met/2008
so
that I could run your wrf_file_list_2008 as is without any changes and
decided to run with version 9.0.3.

Testing with 9.0.3, I ran the following:

> module use /glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/casper/modulefiles
> module load met/9.0.3
> ncar_pylib
>

Then, I changed the version in MTDConfig_r0t05v300 file to "V9.0.3"
and ran
the command exactly as you had, but still sending the screen output to
a
file:
mtd -single wrf_file_list_2008 -config MTDConfig_r0t05v300 -outdir
mtd_out/. -log run_mtd.log -v 3 >& mtd_output_test.log

The code started running and I did not receive the error "cd: Too many
arguments.".

In both cases for 8.1 and 9.0.3, the code is not yet finished running,
however, it appears to be running well. I'll keep an eye on it and
will
follow up if there is an error later.

Maybe there was an issue with your environment? Perhaps you could try
it
again either on Casper now or once Cheyenne returns next week? Once
you're
able to retry, please let us know how it goes and whether or not you
still
receive that error.

Julie
