  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I have been trying to make some figures using (
https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gsd/metvgsd/metviewer1.jsp) using a dataset I
have used in the past. However, I keep getting the error failed to
serialize plot xml. Can you help me with this error?

Thanks
Hannah

Hello Hannah,

I see you're having trouble making plots in the METviewer instances
hosted
at NOAA-GSD. I would really need to replicate this error to have a
guess
as to what's going on. Please see if you can save the plot XML to
your
machine and then send that to me as an attachment.

Alternatively, you can just tell me the plot name timestamp (e.g.
20190903_044237) and I can reload the corresponding plot XML to
replicate
the error you're seeing.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

I can try to send you the XML file. However, I would need your help to
tell
me how I can access or create the XML file that you need.

Thanks
Hannah

Hannah,

OK, I just went to the NOAA/GSD instance of METviewer (
https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gsd/metvgsd/metviewer1.jsp) and was not able
to
make *ANY* plots. Every time I click the "Generate Plot" button, I
get the
error message "failed to serialize plot xml".

However, looking in the history on the left-hand side pop-out window,
I
clearly see that several plots were successfully made yesterday. I
wonder
if perhaps this instance of METviewer works from inside the NOAA
firewall
but not outside?

I talked to Tatiana Burek, the METviewer develop, about this issue and
she
suspects it has something to do with how the tomcat instance is
configured. I've cc'ed Venita Hagerty on this ticket, thinking she
may be
best equipped to debug this at NOAA.

Venita, can you please take a look at this?

FYI, I tested this by loading the XML from one of the previous
successful
plots to the METviewer GUI and then clicking "Generate Plot". That
always
results in "failed to serialize plot xml". Would you expect this to
work
from outside the NOAA firewall?

Thanks,
John

The metv-gsd instance of metviewer should work outside the firewall. I
am
looking into why it has stopped working.

Thank you,
Venita

Plots are working again on metv-gsd. Our system administrator made a
change
to make that happen.

Thank you,
Venita

Venita, thanks for getting this reset. I do agree, I'm now able to
make
plots via that instance of METviewer. However, I do still see an
issue.
During the XML upload process or after making the plot and clicking on
the
XML/Log/R script/R data/SQL tabs, they are all empty. Those files to
exist
on the system but they are not visible via the GUI.

Perhaps that is by design? Ideally, they'd all be visible.

Hannah and Venita, I've attached a short movie demonstrating how you
can
upload and existing XML file from the METviewer history to remake a
plot.
FYI, this also demonstrates the contents of the tabs being empty.
Please
take a look at the attached movie link.

Thanks,
John

Subject: Error generating plot using METviewer v2.11
From: venita.hagerty at noaa.gov
Time: Thu Sep 05 06:55:17 2019

Hi John,

I ran a plot on metvgsd, both on the network and from the eduroam
wireless,
and the tabs had data visible. I know that if the web address in this
line
in the mvservlet.properties file does not match the url used (for
instance,
we have one machine where we sometimes use the ip address rather than
the
url) that the tabs are blank:

url.output=https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gsd/metvgsd/metviewer_output/

It's certainly not by design. Maybe it's a permissions thing?

Thank you for sending the video. For being such an important feature,
the
history tab is very hard to find in METviewer.

Thank you,

Venita
