John, I am verifying probability wind speeds in grid stat and using the NCEP 2.5 climo data mean and stdev files. When I run the data for probability of wind speeds > 15kts with the galwem 00 hr fcst as ground truth, I get ten lines of output in the pstd file where the vx_mask column is FULL_BIN1, FULL_BIN2, etc. up to FULL_BIN10. So I have 10 BSS values for winds > 15kts - which one should I use for my BSS for 15 kts? Should it always be the last bin (in my case bin 10)?

Bob,
If you don't want to subset your results down into climatological
bins, you
can just include all the results in a single bin by using the default
setting in the Grid-Stat config file:
*climo_cdf_bins = 1;*
That should group all the data into the same climo bin. Since you
have 10
different lines of output, I suspect you're using:
*climo_cdf_bins = 10;*
When you break the numbers down into 10 climo bins, you get 10
corresponding BSS values. So how would you defined the "overall
score"
from these 10 BSS values? I'm told that folks at NCEP compute the
mean of
those 10 BSS scores, but I don't know that that's very defensible
statistically. I ran it by Tressa, and it didn't strike her as being
very
useful.
If you want one BSS score to summarize results, I'd suggest setting
climo_cdf_bins = 1.
