Hello,

I am interested in using METplus on Cheyenne/Casper, and Brian at CISL suggested that I ask here about plans for METplus on those systems. Are there plans to install and maintain METplus there?

Hi Julie,

Thanks! One quick question about METplus - from the documentation it
requires python 2.7. Given that python2 is headed for EOL, what are
the plans for METplus and python3?

All the best,
Ben

Hi Ben. We are aware of Python2's upcoming EOL and are preparing to
move
METplus to Python3. I am unsure of the timeline, however, I assure
you
that we are aware and are headed in that direction.

Subject: METplus for Cheyenne/Casper?
From: Benjamin A Cash

Hi Julie,

Sorry, definitely didn’t mean to suggest that somehow you had missed
the memo on the python2 eol! :) I should have been more specific in my
question - mostly I wanted to know what the timeline was for the
python3 transition, but I’d also be interested to hear any suggestions
you have for working with METplus in the interim to minimize the
disruption when the transition happens.

Thanks again,
Ben

Hi Julie,

Thanks! One quick question about METplus - from the documentation it
requires python 2.7. Given that python2 is headed for EOL, what are
the
plans for METplus and python3?

All the best,
Ben

Hello,

I am interested in using METplus on Cheyenne/Casper, and Brian at CISL
suggested that I ask here about plans for METplus on those systems.
Are
there plans to install and maintain METplus there?

All the best,
Ben

No worries! It'll be in the METplus-3.0 and met-9.0, which should
occur in
the Fall / Winter. Sorry to be so vague, we just don't know exactly
when
those versions will be released yet. There shouldn't be much of a
disruption considering they'll be functional with the new releases. I
hope
that helps answer your questions. If not, please let me know.

Thanks,
Julie

Subject: METplus for Cheyenne/Casper?
From: Benjamin A Cash
Time: Tue May 14 09:57:49 2019

Hi Julie,

I had another METplus question I was hoping you could help me out
with. I was looking at the tutorial slides
here<https://dtcenter.org/sites/default/files/community-
code/met/docs/presentations/metplus-tutorial-
20181001/01_METplus_Tutorial_Intro.pdf>, and on slide 36 it says that
METplus has been integrated into the FV3GFS workflow. My goal in using
METplus is to develop a post-processing workflow for the public
release of the coupled UFS, and it seems like the configuration files
etc for FV3GFS would be a good place to start. I didn’t see anything
that looked related to FV3 in the part/use_cases directory - do you
have any examples related to FV3 you could share? Or any other advice
on how best to get started on this?

Thanks again,
Ben

Hi Julie,

Sorry, definitely didn’t mean to suggest that somehow you had missed
the
memo on the python2 eol! :) I should have been more specific in my
question
- mostly I wanted to know what the timeline was for the python3
transition,
but I’d also be interested to hear any suggestions you have for
working
with METplus in the interim to minimize the disruption when the
transition
happens.

Subject: METplus for Cheyenne/Casper?
From: Mallory Row - NOAA Affiliate
Time: Wed May 15 11:30:54 2019

Hi Ben,

Julie forwarded me you e-mail asking about incorporating METplus into
the
UFS workflow. The configuration files I have set up reside with the
workflow and not in METplus since these files have a lot of
dependencies of
variables set within the workflow itself. However, I have attached a
presentation I gave at a tutorial about this topic. Essentially what I
do
is I have a mediator script that the workflow calls. In this mediator
script is the setting of a lot of environment variables and the
METplus
calls. In the configuration files, I set the appropriate variables
values
to the environment variables.
