  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I need some help with setting up the configuration file to use climatology data file for forecast verification.

I do not want to hardcode the filename in the configuration file since the filename changes with each day of the year.
The files will be in a specific folder. For example:
/home/xyz/climo/z500hPa_stdev_090512.grb

The goal is to verify the Geopotential at level 500.
Is there a way to do that by setting the climo_mean and climo_stdev dictionaries in the config file with
filename set as a template and match_day set to TRUE?

Thank you
Suseela Sarasamma

Hi,

I figured it out. Using environment variable for the climo-Mean and
climo_stdev filenames worked for me.

Thanks

John,

Thank you. I have another question on the outputs produced by MET 6.1
point_stat() function:
For some reason, I am getting only the column names in each of the
outputs
produced.
I am using a MET config file like the one attached.
I am using point_stat with a .5 deg GFS GEPS ensemble member file in
grib2
format as forecast file and point observations in a netcdf file
format.
There is data in both files and the log report shows it is working on
the
process and it spits out lot of details in the log.
I think the matched pair count is 0. Is there something I need to
change in
the attached config file?

Thanks
Suseela

Suseela,

Thanks for sending your sample Point-Stat configuration file. Looking
in
the "output_flag" section, I see that you're requesting the matched
pairs
(MPR) output line type. That tells Point-Stat to dump out the paired
forecast/observation values for each station. However, you're getting
0
matched pairs... and so the output file is empty (other than headers).
Once you're able to get Point-Stat to produce matched pairs, I'd
suggest
turning on additional output line types... such as CNT for continuous
statistics and SL1L2 for partial sums.

But first we need to figure out why you're getting 0 matched pairs. I
would suggest re-running your test case after making 2 changes:
(1) Use the "-v 3" command line option to increase the logging level
to 3.
That tells Point-Stat to write more verbose log output.
(2) Use the "-log run_ps.log" command line option to write those log
messages to a file.

After you've rerun, open up "run_ps.log" and look for the following
type of
log messages:

*DEBUG 3: Number of matched pairs = 317DEBUG 3: Observations
processed =
89893DEBUG 3: Rejected: SID exclusion = 0DEBUG 3: Rejected: GRIB code
= 79788DEBUG 3: Rejected: valid time = 0DEBUG 3: Rejected: bad obs
value  = 0DEBUG 3: Rejected: off the grid   = 5DEBUG 3: Rejected:
level
mismatch = 9219DEBUG 3: Rejected: quality marker = 0DEBUG 3: Rejected:
message type = 344DEBUG 3: Rejected: masking region = 220DEBUG 3:
Rejected: bad fcst value = 0DEBUG 3: Rejected: duplicates = 0*

For each verification task, Point-Stat lists out the number of matched
pairs found (in your case it'll be 0) followed by counts of reasons
for why
observations weren't used for that task. Those counts will give us a
clue
as to why you got 0 matches. Please take a look at that and let me
know
what you find.

Thanks,
John
