I was going through the MET documentation and noticed METViewer but it
seems the documentation states that it is mainly used internally at DTC. Is
this still true or is it being used in the community as well?

Hi Brad,

You ask a very good question about METViewer. Let me explain the
current
situation.

Currently, METViewer is installed in 3 locations: at NCAR/RAL and used
by
the DTC, at NOAA/GSD, at NCEP/EMC. The first one is publicly open
while
the other two sit behind firewalls.

Here's a link to the DTC's instance:
   http://www.dtcenter.org/met/metviewer/metviewer1.jsp

You'll notice across the top a drop-down list of databases.
Basically,
each database corresponds to a different testing and evaluation
project.
While you can see this instance of METViewer and even use it to create
plots, there is no way for you to upload your own data.

Unless you have direct access to one of these 3 installations, you
won't be
able to upload your own data.

Ideally, we'd like to provide this powerful tool to wide range of
users,
and we've been talking about how to do that for a while now. Not only
is
there the issue of accessing the tool, there's also the issue of
training
people how to use it.

At the upcoming AMS in Austin in January, the DTC will be teaching a 1
day
short-course about running end-to-end NWP and verification tools all
within
Docker containers. Included in that will be running METViewer in a
Docker
container. So between now and then, we need to actually get that last
piece working!

Once we do, we'll make that docker image available to everyone. As
long as
you have docker installed on your machine, you should be able run
METViewer
with your own data. Using containers should get folks up and running
quickly without the large overhead of setting up a real instance of
METViewer.

We are also starting to develop some automated tests of the METViewer
GUI,
which we hope to be able to convert into little tutorials
demonstrating how
to make various plot types.
