[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #82571] History for Verification over Alaska

Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I would like to create some mask files for subregions of my Alaska NCEP
grid 91. I know the SAK.poly is bad for now and can't be used. So I
can only use NAK.poly. But I would like to have even smaller
subregions. For instance, I would like to verify over Juneau,
Anchorage, etc... Could I do something like wgrib2 my Alaska gridded
data to a Juneau grid and use that like a "FULL" domain when running
MET? I would do something like the following:
wgrib2def="nps:225.000000:60.000000 217.500000:655:1488.281500
51.500000:855:1488.281500"
${WGRIB2} alaska.91.gb2 -set_grib_type c3 -set_bitmap 1 -new_grid_winds
grid -new_grid_interpolation bilinear -new_grid ${wgrib2def}
alaska.juneau.gb2
Or is there a simple way I could create a poly file for Juneau? I would
rather create a poly file for each subregion, so I don't have to trick
each subregion as "FULL" when running MET.
Thanks, Annette

Annette,
It sounds like you already have a definition of the "Juneau grid" that
you'd like to use. There are a few ways you could define these sub-
regions
in MET without needs to regrid and use "FULL":.
(1) Use "mask.grid" in the config file to point to a data file which
defines the Juneau grid.
MET reads your gridded forecast file (i.e. Alaska grid) and
determines your model domain. It reads the grid information from the
"mask.grid" file and defines the masking area as an forecast grid
points
that fall inside your sub-domain (i.e. Juneau grid).
(2) Use "mask.poly" in the conifg file to specify lat/lon points.
MET only uses forecast grid points which fall inside the region
defined by the lat/lon points you specify in an ASCII file.
Please take a look at page 59 of the MET User's Guide:
https://dtcenter.org/met/users/docs/users_guide/MET_Users_Guide_v6.0.pdf
Also, be aware that you can also run the gen_vx_mask tool to generate
your
Junuea mask and then pass that NetCDF output file in the "mask.poly"
section of the MET config files.
Here's more info about the gen_vx_mask tool:
https://dtcenter.org/met/users/support/online_tutorial/METv6.0/tutorial.php?name=gen_vx_mask&category=index
Hopefully that helps clarify. But please let us know if you have more
questions.
Thanks,
John
