lines to add to my configuration file to handle probabilities of
multiple thresholds in a configuration file. Now that we are running
in MET 6.0, I wanted to see if I get the same error and I do when I
tried your method - See below. My configuration file is attached.
I also include the Grib2 file inventory I am reading. Did I code

OK, I understand. You need help setting up the configuration file to
do
verifying probability forecasts from a GRIB2 data file. The things
that'd
help the most is a sample GRIB2 data file. I found this filename in
the
logging output from MET:

I went hunting around on NCEP ftp sites trying to find a sample GRIB2
data
file containing this probability data. While I found the individual

GEFS members, their means, and their spreads, I couldn't find the
derived
probabilities.
Could you please send me one of these data files, and I'll see what it
takes for met-6.0 to read it on my end.

OK, I understand. You need help setting up the configuration file to
do verifying probability forecasts from a GRIB2 data file. The things
that'd help the most is a sample GRIB2 data file. I found this
filename in the logging output from MET:
/h/data/global/WXQC/data/geps_verify/qcsave/2017041812/grib2.2017041812.
0006.NOAA
I went hunting around on NCEP ftp sites trying to find a sample GRIB2
data file containing this probability data. While I found the
individual 21 GEFS members, their means, and their spreads, I couldn't
find the derived probabilities.
Could you please send me one of these data files, and I'll see what it
takes for met-6.0 to read it on my end.

Great, thanks. I grabbed it and was able to plot a probability field
using
the following call to plot_data_plane:

Running at verbosity level 3, the log message confirm that we
correctly
used GRIB record number 255:
DEBUG 3: MetGrib2DataFile::data_plane() - Found exact match for
'PROB(TMP>273.150)/Z2/PROB' in GRIB2 record 255 field 1 of GRIB2 file
'grib2.2017042400.0012.NOAA'
The resulting image is attached. You should be able to use similar
settings in the other MET config files to access these GRIB2 records.
Note
the following:
- For probabilities use: name="PROB";
- Set the level to the level value of the field for which the
probability
is defined (i.e. for 2-m temperature use: level = "Z2";)
- Use the prob dictionary to specify the fields for which the
probability
is defined. Be sure to define the name of the field (i.e. name =
"TMP")
and use thresh_lo and/or thresh_hi for the thresholds used to define
the
probability.
Please search for "prob" in met-6.0/share/met/config/README for a
couple
more examples.
Hopefully this will get you back up and running.

Running at verbosity level 3, the log message confirm that we
correctly used
GRIB record number 255:
DEBUG 3: MetGrib2DataFile::data_plane() - Found exact match for
'PROB(TMP>273.150)/Z2/PROB' in GRIB2 record 255 field 1 of GRIB2 file
'grib2.2017042400.0012.NOAA'
The resulting image is attached. You should be able to use similar
settings
in the other MET config files to access these GRIB2 records. Note the
following:
- For probabilities use: name="PROB";
- Set the level to the level value of the field for which the
probability is
defined (i.e. for 2-m temperature use: level = "Z2";)
- Use the prob dictionary to specify the fields for which the
probability is
defined. Be sure to define the name of the field (i.e. name = "TMP")
and use
thresh_lo and/or thresh_hi for the thresholds used to define the
probability.
Please search for "prob" in met-6.0/share/met/config/README for a
couple more
examples.
Hopefully this will get you back up and running.

causing problems. Please try the following:
(1) Run the following command and make sure that it still fails:

/h/data/global/WXQC/data/geps_verify/qcsave/2017042400/grib2.2017042400
.0012.NOAA \
/home/qcteam/image.ps \
'name="PROB"; level="A6"; prob = {name="APCP"; thresh_lo=.1;}' -v 3
(2) Unset those environment variables:
unsetenv USER_GRIB_TABLES
unsetenv MET_GRIB_TABLES
(3) Run this command to count up the GRIB tables in your met-6.0 build
(there should be 51):
ls /d1/johnhg/MET/MET_releases/met-6.0/share/met/table_files/grib*.txt
| wc
-w
(4) Rerun the plot_data_plane command to see if it still fails.

John, unsetting the MET_GRIB_TABLES variable worked. So what is wrong
with my
grib2 table (grib2_geps.txt)? A while back you said it had to have
two spaces
separating the strings in the table. I have tried it that way and
with only
one space but neither work. Are you able to use my table there?

(2) Unset those environment variables:
unsetenv USER_GRIB_TABLES

(3) Run this command to count up the GRIB tables in your met-6.0 build

(4) Rerun the plot_data_plane command to see if it still fails.

Bob,
I looked at this through the debugger and see what's going on, but
don't
have a good explanation for you at this point.
One of our tasks for the next release is revisiting this and cleaning
up
the table lookup logic for GRIB1 and GRIB2 to make sure it's
consistent.
I'll be pretty deep into the details at that point and will revisit
this
issue at that time.
Sorry I don't have a better explanation for you at this point.
