  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi:

I have some files (netCDF, polar stereographic grid) that ran successfully
in mode 5.2, but they don't seem to work in 6.0. I changed nothing in the
file or in the param file, except to make the version 6.0. The error I get
is:

ERROR :
ERROR  : MetNcFile::data(NcVar *, const LongArray &, DataPlane &) const ->
star found in bad slot
ERROR :

Is there a way around this?

Thanks,
Tina

Hi Tina.

Please post the data (fcst, obs, and config) that you used for the
mode run
file to our anonymous ftp site following these instructions:

http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp

or you can just put them on scratch.

Also, please let us know the last set of patches that have been
applied to
your version of met-5.2 and met-6.0.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie:

How do I check to see what set of patches have been applied to my met
5.2
and 6.0? I'm running the mode installed here:
/usr/local/met-6.0/bin/mode
/usr/local/met-5.2/bin/mode

I put my data and config file on /scratch/WEEKLY/Tina/met

Let me know what other information you need!

Tina

Hi Tina.

Thank you! It looks like this is a known bug in met-6.0 and was fixed
with
the patches on April 19, 2017. So, you would need to run a more
current
version on met-6.0 to be able to use met-6.0. I'll see what we can do
to
get that updated in /usr/local/.

Thanks,
Julie

Subject: Files work in mode 5.2, but not in mode 6.0
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Fri Aug 18 15:07:21 2017

Tina and Julie,

This actually raises a really good point. How do you know what patch
level
has been applied? Each time a patch is applied the first few lines of
the
top-level README file are updated. They look something like this:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Repository:
https://svn-met-dev.cgd.ucar.edu/branches/met/met-6.0_bugfix
Revision: 4757
Change Date: 2017-07-21 12:35:05 -0600 (Fri, 21 Jul 2017)

Model Evaluation Tools METv6.0 (April 2017)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

However that README file isn't one of the distribution files included
in
/usr/local/met-6.0/share/met. So there's really currently no way for
Tina
to know.

We should fix this.

I can think of a couple of options:
(1) Add a 3rd decimal place to the released version number and update
it
every time we post a patch. Seems a little annoying then that you
might
have "6.0.1" output and "6.0.4" output depending on the version.

(2) Or we could make the executables smart enough to dump out the
latest
patch date when you run them with no arguments. Add that patch date
info:

[johnhg at number5]%
grid_stat

*** Model Evaluation Tools (METV6.1) (patch date 2017-07-21)
***

Usage:
grid_stat

fcst_file

obs_file

config_file

        [-outdir path]
        [-log file]
        [-v level]
        [-compress level]

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
John

Tina,

Please retry the problematic commands using the newly patched version
of
MET available in:
   /usr/local/met-6.0/bin

Hopefully that'll solve the issues you found.

Thanks,
John
