  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi MET users,

I am new in MET tool and like to calculate MSESS, ANOM_CORR and CRPSS
with respect to Observation climatology. I have gridded data (netcdf
files), model (time=30yr, lat, lon) and observed data (time=30yr, lat,
lon). I believe grid_stat is best tool to calculate the above skill
score (from the MET user guide). Do you have any example to do this
calculation?

with regards

-Deb

Hi MET users,

I could able to run single year file without any errors/warnings

/glade/p/ral/jnt/MET/MET_releases/met-5.2/bin/grid_stat INT_1981.grb
daymet_1981.grb GridStatConfig_default -v 2

I got a netcdf file with following variables FCST, OBS, DIFF and
CLIMO_MEAN

my question is 1) How to use all 30 files (from 1981-2000)?
                          2) How to calculate the skill score MSESS,
ANOM_CORR and CRPSS ? what do I need to change in the configure file
to
get skill score?

with regards
-Deb

Hi Deb,

Yep, we received your recent met_help ticket. Sorry for delay, we're
busily working on the next release. Might be easiest to just have you
come
by my office and we can take a closer look at your data.

Are you available at 2pm?

Thanks,
John

Hi Deb,

Just to follow up.

In my testing with your data, I found/fixed a pesky little bug in the
retrieval of the climo data. It was finding it for the first (of 30)
time
steps but not for the other 29. We were indexing into an array
poorly.
This is fixed in the development version of MET... version 6.0 due out
in a
couple of weeks. And this yields good anomaly correlation values.

How should I get these changes to you? Do you need a patched version
of
5.2 or is waiting for 6.0 good enough?

Also, based on our discussion, it sounds like what's needed is a new
tool
for "Ensemble-Series-Analysis". That would be a significant effort
and
would take a while. For now, I'll create a new development task in
our
tracking software so that we don't forget about it.

However, I'd encourage you to talk to Caspar Ammann. He's a scientist
in
RAL who lead a couple of climate projects with decent funding. It's
possible that if you describe the type of functionality you'd like
added to
MET, that he may agree and direct that some of his project funding pay
for
the work.

Thanks,
John

Hi John, Thanks for the effort. I am okay with patch version of 5.2.

Thanks again

Hello Deb,

I was reviewing old met-help tickets and see that this one was still
open.

I've recompiled MET, both versions 5.2 and 6.0, on yellowstone at the
paths listed at the bottom of this page:

http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/downloads/index.php

Both versions include this bugfix.

I'll go ahead and resolve this ticket now. If more questions come up,
please just write a new message to met_help at ucar.edu

Thanks,
John
