Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear MET Help,
I'm having trouble updating our scripts to sum WRF model hourly forecast precip for 1 or more files. In a nutshell, I cannot get "pcp_combine -sum" to work for me.
Here is some background on my problem:
* I have hourly GRIB2 WRF out files, each with 1-h accumulated precip (no simulation total precip)
* Using regrid_data_plane, I am remapping each hourly forecast APCP_01 to the observed grid (which happens to be a subset of IMERG global 0.1-deg data in GRIB2 format). This creates individual hourly netcdf files for input to pcp_combine into a temporary directory.
* Next, I try running "pcp_combine -sum" as follows: "pcp_combine -sum 20160501_000000 1 20160501_060000 03 /raid1/sport/people/casejl/MET/gridData/forecast_APCP_03 -pcpdir /raid1/sport/people/casejl/MET/gridData/wrf_tmp -v 3"
o FYI, my model initialization time is 00z 1 May 2016, and in the above example I'm attempting to create a 3-h accumulated precip valid at 06z 1 May 2016 by summing the 3 1-h accumulated precip valid at 04z, 05z, and 06z in the temporary directory.
Unfortunately, I'm receiving the following errors that I am unable to diagnose or resolve:
pcp_combine -sum 20160501_000000 1 20160501_060000 03 /raid1/sport/people/casejl/MET/gridData/forecast_APCP_03 -pcpdir /raid1/sport/people/casejl/MET/gridData/wrf_tmp -v 3
DEBUG 2: Performing sum command: Init/In_Accum/Valid/Out_Accum Times = 20160501_000000/010000/20160501_060000/030000
DEBUG 2: Searching for 3 files with accumulation times of 010000 to sum to a total accumulation time of 030000.
ERROR :
ERROR : sum_data_files() -> Cannot find a file with a valid time of 20160501_060000 and accumulation time of 010000 matching the regular expression ".*"
ERROR :
The valid times and accumulation times all look as I expect in the output netcdf files produced by regrid_data_plane, so I'm at a loss as to why I'm receiving this error.
Please advise.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Case

Hello Julie,
I was able to figure out the problem over the weekend, but it still
doesn't make sense to me.
I had to set the "-field" entry, specifically noting the level to be
'(*,*)' instead of that specified in the netcdf output of
regrid_data_plane (i.e., A1 for 1-h precip).
Sincerely,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan. I'm glad to hear that you were able to resolve the
problem over the weekend, even if it didn't make sense to you.
John is currently out of the office, but may be able to provide you
with an explanation of why you had to set the "-field" entry, when he
returns. I'll touch base with him when he gets back.
Thanks,
Julie

Subject: problems with pcp_combine in MET v5.1
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Wed Jul 06 16:35:37 2016
Jonathan,
The -sum command for pcp_combine only works for GRIB input files, and
not
for NetCDF files. For NetCDF files, the "-add" and "-subtract"
options do
work by specifying the "name" and "level" of the fields to be used.
And
it's in the level string where the silly "(*,*)" shows up.
One option would be to *not* run the regrid_data_plane tool, and just
run
pcp_combine on the GRIB files directly. So you'd be computing the
accumulation on the larger domain used in the GRIB files.
Then pass the accumulated NetCDF output of pcp_combine to the other
MET
tools for verification and use the automated regridding feature at
that
point. For more info, take a look at the "regrid" section within the
MET
config files.
Hope that helps. Just let me know what else you need clarified.
Thanks,
John

John,
That's odd because my method seemed to have worked. I guess I'll need
to closely verify what the pcp_combine did when summing the regridded
netcdf files.
Based on what you've mentioned, it sounds like I need to re-do the
logic such that forecast model precip accumulations are summed on the
native model grid, and then passed to regrid_data_plance to be mapped
onto the observed grid. Then at that point, I can run grid_stat to
compare the model/obs precip grids on the same obs grid.
Does this sound reasonable to you?

v5.1
Jonathan,
The -sum command for pcp_combine only works for GRIB input files, and
not for NetCDF files. For NetCDF files, the "-add" and "-subtract"
options do work by specifying the "name" and "level" of the fields to
be used. And it's in the level string where the silly "(*,*)" shows
up.
One option would be to *not* run the regrid_data_plane tool, and just
run pcp_combine on the GRIB files directly. So you'd be computing the
accumulation on the larger domain used in the GRIB files.
Then pass the accumulated NetCDF output of pcp_combine to the other
MET tools for verification and use the automated regridding feature at
that point. For more info, take a look at the "regrid" section within
the MET config files.
Hope that helps. Just let me know what else you need clarified.
Thanks,
John

Subject: problems with pcp_combine in MET v5.1
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Thu Jul 07 10:08:31 2016
Jon,
Actually, you can skip the regrid_data_plane step entirely. Let's
assume
you've already run your GRIB output through pcp_combine to sum it up
to the
desired accumulation interval. As of MET version 5.1, you can pass
Grid-Stat forecast and observed data files that are defined on
different
grids. In the config file, you can tell Grid-Stat the grid you'd like
to
use for the verification. It sounds like you want to regrid the
forecast
data to the observation grid, and since this is precip, I'd recommend
using
budget interpolation...
//
// Verification grid
//
regrid = {
to_grid = OBS;
vld_thresh = 1.0;
method = BUDGET;
width = 2;
}
Setting "to_grid = OBS" defines the observation grid as the
verification
domain. "method = BUDGET" and "width = 2" defines the interpolation
method
to be used. Setting "vld_thresh = 1.0" says that we'll only compute
an
interpolated value when all 4 (=2x2) input grid points contain valid
data.
And if you'd like to see the result of this interpolation, you could
have
Grid-Stat dump out the NetCDF matched pairs output file.
Make sense?
Of course, running the extra step through regrid_data_plane should
work as
well. But hopefully using Grid-Stat's automated regridding feature
will
simplify the logic.
Thanks,
John

John H-G,
Yes, I was considering that method you described below, but now I
can't remember why I scripted up the regrid_data_plane method. I
support as long as I do the summing and provide grid_stat with the
summed forecast and observed netcdf files, then that should accomplish
what I need.
Thanks for the help,
JonC

Setting "to_grid = OBS" defines the observation grid as the

we'll only compute an interpolated value when all 4 (=2x2) input grid
