Initial Request

To whom it may concern,
I have followed all of the online instructions for compiling software for
Met 5.0 on my Ubuntu machine and verified installation.
I run
./configure --prefix=/home/amos/Desktop/met-5.0 --enable-mode_graphics
Then
*make install >& make_install.log &*
*./../ylwrap: line 113: yacc: command not foundMakefile:404: recipe for
target 'color_parser_yacc.cc' failedmake[3]: *** [color_parser_yacc.cc]
Error 1make[3]: Leaving directory
'/home/amos/Desktop/met-5.0/src/libcode/vx_color'Makefile:298: recipe for
target 'install-recursive' failedmake[2]: *** [install-recursive] Error
1make[2]: Leaving directory
'/home/amos/Desktop/met-5.0/src/libcode'Makefile:290: recipe for target
'install-recursive' failedmake[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1make[1]:
Leaving directory '/home/amos/Desktop/met-5.0/src'Makefile:345: recipe for
target 'install-recursive' failedmake: *** [install-recursive] Error 1*
Do you know what could be causing this error? I have read all your error
documentation and added patches and have not found a solution. Could this
be a Ubuntu problem? I use all gnu compilers.Thank you very much for your
time!
Sincerely,
Emily

Hello Emily,
I see that you're having trouble compiling MET version 5.0. We just
released MET version 5.2 two days ago. And hopefully we've solved the
lex/yacc Makefile issues in that release. Unless you have a
compelling
reason not to, I'd suggest compiling MET version 5.2.
Please let me know what issues you have with version 5.2 and I'd be
happy
to help:

Wow thank you John for such a quick response! Will give that a go
this
evening. Do you know if there have been any Ubuntu issues? I know
generally in the meteorological community usually red hat derivatives
are
usually favoured. Thanks!

Emily,
I don't expect there to be any issues related to using Ubuntu versus
Red
Hat. We do development using Debian, have taught tutorials using
CentOS,
and have definitely compiled on Red Hat in the past. Not to say that
people haven't run into issues compiling MET, but none specific to
Ubuntu!
Thanks,
John

John,
I have nearly completed the make test of MET 5.2 but have run into
problems
with pb2nc. I have recompiled and re-downloaded BUFRLIB twice, but
still
receive the following error. I also followed the instructions online
about
*--disable-block4* on your website, and still seem to have a problem
with
the program locating -lbufr. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you
very
much- almost there!
-lquadmath

Subject: Met 5.0 make problems
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Thu Aug 18 10:22:18 2016
Hi Emily,
Here's the relevant error message from what you sent me:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lbufr
The linker is looking for the BUFRLIB file named "libbufr.a", and we
just
need to tell it where to look. Once the linker finds BUFRLIB, it's
possible that there will be more issues, but telling it where to look
is
the first step.
Please do the following:
(1) Locate the file "libbufr.a" that was created by compiling BUFRLIB
and
take note of the directory it's in.
(2) Set the MET_BUFRLIB environment variable to point to that
directory and
tell the linker where to look...
In c-shell: setenv MET_BUFRLIB /path/to/dir
In bash: export MET_BUFRLIB=/path/to/dir
(3) Rerun the MET configure script.
(4) Recompile MET.
If you get more errors please send me both the output of make and the
file
named "config.log" in the top-level MET directory. That's the output
of
the configure script and will tell me a lot about your environment.
Thanks,
John

Subject: Met 5.0 make problems
From: emily niebuhr

John,
I have been recompiling different versions, but with no success,
sorry
that I need to bother you again! Even if I type export etc directly
into
the bash prompt, it still does not find the correct file, even though
the
file is clearly in the gsl directory. I noticed a few odd errors in
the
config log referencing GSL including warning: conflicting types for
built-in function 'sqrt' char sqrt (); Could this mean that I need a
different version of gsl? I went with an earlier version of GSL as
noted
in the instructions just in case, although I am not using PGI.
Here are the associated config files
Thanks so much!!

Subject: Met 5.0 make problems
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Fri Aug 19 16:39:17 2016
Emily,
Thanks for sending those files. That helps a lot!
Short story, please try setting:
unset MET_BUFR
export MET_BUFRLIB=/home/amos/Desktop/BUFRLIB
And then rerun configure and make install.
Long story...
Looking in config.log, I see:
MET_BUFR='/home/amos/Desktop/BUFRLIB'
MET_BUFRLIB='${MET_BUFR}/lib'
That looks like you set "MET_BUFR" and not "MET_BUFRLIB". The typical
convention is that when libraries are installed, header files are
copied
into an "include" subdirectory and library files are copied into a
"lib"
sub-directory. But BUFRLIB doesn't follow that convention... it's
just
compiled in place and doesn't really have support for "installing" it.
Setting MET_BUFR=/path, MET assumes it follows the typical convention,
looking for header files in /path/include and library files in
/path/lib,
but BUFRLIB doesn't have a "lib" subdirectory! Instead of MET_BUFR,
we can
explicitly set MET_BUFRINC and MET_BUFRLIB to tell it where to find
include
and library files. Since MET doesn't include any files from BUFRLIB
we
skip the MET_BUFRINC step.
Basically, we want to tell MET how to find the file
/home/amos/Desktop/BUFRLIB/libbufr.a, and we do that be setting
MET_BUFRLIB=/home/amos/Desktop/BUFRLIB.
Hope that does the trick. Have a nice weekend.
John

Thank you so much John - that was the trick! I knew it had to be
something
silly like that since I had reconfirmed and compiled all of the
supporting
software multiple times. Will watch out for my mistake in the future.
Thanks again for all your great support- I haven't used MET for
several
years and looks like there are a lot of great new features to learn!
Sincerely,
Emily
