For MET V4.1, just wanted to confirm my understanding about the "field"
variable in the "interp" group of the config file. If I'm using gridded
fcsts and point observations, the appropriate value is "FCST" since the
observations are not gridded. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Subject: question about Ensemble-Stat (UNCLASSIFIED)

Hi John,

When doing point verification, the "interp.field" setting is not
actually
used. Ensemble-Stat uses the interpolation methods defined in the
"interp.type" array to control the logic of interpolating gridded
forecast
values to point observation locations. The setting for "interp.field"
should have no impact on point verification.

However, it is used when verifying against gridded observations. This
is
analogous to the logic in grid_stat. Prior to computing stats, you
can
smooth the gridded data if you'd like. In that context,
"interp.field"
specifies whether the forecast, observation, or both should be
smoothed.

But that setting doesn't apply for point verification.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway
