I seemed to remember you saying this might be caused by a variable getting too big which you previously sent us a fix.  Matt had installed this fix on one of our systems but not the one I am running on.  So I proceeded to install the fix on current system I am running on.  I unzipped and untarred the two files: met-5.1_patches_20160523.tar.gz and met-5.1_patches_20160616.tar.gz in the our /h/WXQC/met-5.1 directory.  I then did a make clean, followed by ./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-modis --enable-mode_graphics, make install > make_install.log &.  When tailing the make_install.log file I see the following errors:

Hi Bob.  I see that you are having problems compiling MET version 5.1.
Thanks for sending the output compilation.  I believe that the error
you are getting is due tot he fact that MET can't find the GSL (gnu
scientific library) header files it is looking for.  You probably just
need to modify your MET_GSL environment variable to get this working.

When you build and install GSL, it creates "lib" and "include"
subdirectories in the installation directory.  The "include"
subdirectory contains another directory called "gsl" at that's where
all the header files are.  In the MET source code, we specify that
"gsl" directory in
the path when including GSL header files.  It's that extra "gsl"
subdirectory than can cause confusion.  I'm guessing that you've set
the GSL environment variables like this:
   MET_GSLINC=/path/to/gsl/include/gsl
   MET_GSLLIB=/path/to/gsl/lib

If that's the case, please try unsetting MET_GSLINC and MET_GSLLIB and
just set:
   MET_GSL=/path/to/gsl

Then run configure again followed by make.

Please let me know how it goes and if you run into any more problems.

installed this fix on one of our systems but not the one I am running
on.  So I proceeded to install the fix on current system I am running
on.  I unzipped and untarred the two files: met-
5.1_patches_20160523.tar.gz and met-5.1_patches_20160616.tar.gz in the
our /h/WXQC/met-5.1 directory.  I then did a make clean, followed by
./configure --prefix=`pwd` --enable-grib2 --enable-modis --enable-
mode_graphics, make install > make_install.log &.  When tailing the

Hi Bob.  I see that you are having problems compiling MET version 5.1.
Thanks for sending the output compilation.  I believe that the error
you are getting is due tot he fact that MET can't find the GSL (gnu
scientific library) header files it is looking for.  You probably just
need to modify your MET_GSL environment variable to get this working.

When you build and install GSL, it creates "lib" and "include"
subdirectories in the installation directory.  The "include"
subdirectory contains another directory called "gsl" at that's where
all the header files are.  In the MET source code, we specify that
"gsl" directory in the path when including GSL header files.  It's
that extra "gsl"
subdirectory than can cause confusion.  I'm guessing that you've set
the GSL environment variables like this:
   MET_GSLINC=/path/to/gsl/include/gsl
   MET_GSLLIB=/path/to/gsl/lib

If that's the case, please try unsetting MET_GSLINC and MET_GSLLIB and
just set:
   MET_GSL=/path/to/gsl

Then run configure again followed by make.

Please let me know how it goes and if you run into any more problems.

Hi Bob.

It looks like the compiler is having trouble finding the "hdf.h",
"mfhdf.h", and "HdfEosDef.h" include files.  The HDF4 and HDF-EOS2
libraries are required for building the MODIS-Regrid tool.  This tool
is optional.  If you do not anticipate using MODIS data, you can
simply disable support for that tool by removing "--enable-modis" from
your "./configure" command.

If you would like to use the MODIS-Regird tool, you can follow the
section for "Compiling HDF and HDF-EOS" to build these libraries on
this page:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/online_tutorial/METv5.0/compilation/req_libs.php

Once those have been installed, you can do the following to set up the
necessary environment variables:

If compiling MODIS-Regrid, set $MET_HDF to point to the main HDF
directory, or set $MET_HDFINC to point to the directory with the
HDF include files and set $MET_HDFLIB to point to the directory with
the HDF library files. Also, set $MET_HDFEOSINC to point to the
directory with the HDF EOS include files and set $MET_HDFEOSLIB to
point to the directory with the HDF EOS library files.

Then, you should be able to run configure and the make_install again.
