Initial Request

Hello,
I used MODE several years ago with WRF netCDF output, and at that time,
John Halley Gotway had to write scripts to convert the WRF netCDF into a
type of netCDF that MODE needed.
I was curious if the new version of MET with MODE (from summer 2014) still
will require conversion of WRF netCDF into a different format for input
into MODE, or if that quirk has been fixed so that MODE will automatically
be able to input the standard WRF netCDF output files?

Bill,
MET still doesn't read the netcdf output of WRF directly. Instead, we
encourage folks to post process WRF output using the Unified Post
Processor
(UPP). It's output is in GRIB format which can easily be regridded
using
the copygb utility, whereas there is no easy way of regridding netcdf
data,
in general. Are you able to run UPP?
Thanks
John

I will have to check about UPP. Many of my students do not use it,
instead
going directly to ncl scripts or python.

John,
One of my students has run unipost from it. I don't know anything
about
UPP -- is unipost what my other student would need to use to get the
output
in grib format for use in MODE? Is unipost just some other program
that is
irrelevant but does imply that the data were turned into the needed
grib
format?

Hi Bill,
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I just got back in
the
office today.
UPP post-processes WRF output and does several things...
- It interpolates the native model output to pressure levels in the
vertical.
- It de-staggers the data horizontally and places them on a regular
grid.
- It computes several derived variables that WRF doesn't output
directly.
Here's a website about UPP. It's included on the WRF-NMM website but
works
fine for WRF-ARW output as well:
http://www.dtcenter.org/wrf-nmm/users/overview/upp_overview.php
A few years back, UPP replaced WPP (WRF PostProcessor) when NCEP
merged
their various post-processing tools into a single one. That's the
reason
for "unified" in the name. NCEP uses the same code to post-process
most of
their model runs (WRF, GFS, and so on). The publicly available
version of
UPP is almost identical to the one NCEP uses. And it's the DTC's job
to
keep them as closely in-sync as possible.
You compile, configure, and run UPP just like you do for WRF. It
writes
GRIB1 and/or GRIB2, I believe. I'd suggest giving it a try, and if
your
students can get WRF up and running, UPP shouldn't be too difficult.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
John
