  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Sir/Madam,

I'd like to apply MET to verfy WRF output with mast obs, and mast obs is on 10,30,40,50,60,70m etc, above ground level. But when I do such jobs with the following command: ./point_stat wrfout_d03_2012-07-02_02\:00\:00.grb1 mast_2012-07-02_02.nc PointStatConfig, I encounter some problems. For the wrfout_d03_2012-07-02_02\:00\:00.grb1 file, it's converted from the WRF output using UPP and has been interpolated to several AGLs including 70m. The mast_2012-07-02_02.nc, which is generated using the ascii2nc utility in MET, also contains several vertical levels (AGL) in it. In the PoingStatConfig, I want to verify the Z70 WIND, but to my surpise, all vertical levels rather than only the 70m AGL in the mast_2012-07-02_02.nc is used. Will you please give me some indication on what's going on with this?Thank you! I attach some necessary files for test within this email.

Kind regards,
Yangyang Zhao

Yangyang,

I see that you're having trouble getting Point-Stat to perform the
type of vertical level matching that you expect. I retrieved the
PointStatConfig file that you sent, but didn't see any data files
attached to your email. If you'd like to send us data, you can post
it to our anonymous ftp site following these instructions:
    http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp

However, I have a pretty good guess as to what's going on. Looking in
your Point-Stat config file, I see that you're using the "ADPSFC"
message type. That message type is a special value that tells
Point-Stat that these observations occur at the surface. However,
based on your description, that's not correct - they actually occur up
to 70 meters above ground level. When Point-Stat sees that
you're verifying a "vertical level" type of field (e.g. 2m temp, 10m
winds, or even 70m winds) against a surface message type ("ADPSFC" or
"SFCSHP") it uses *ALL* of the point observations of that
type regardless of their height above ground. This logic usually
simplifies things so that when you're verifying 2m temperature, your
observations don't have to have exactly a 2m level value in them.
But in your case, it causes all observations to be used in the
verification of all forecast levels.

The simple fix is to change the point observation message type from
"ADPSFC" to "ADPUPA".

Please give that a shot and let me know if Point-Stat does what you
expect.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway
