Hello,

I am just wondering how to specify the pmsl field for MODE? PRMSL is the grib abbreviation but what comes after the slash "/" ?

The documentation states:

"A slash and a level indicator in the form "ANNN", "ZNNN",
"PNNN", "PNNN-NNN", "LNNN", or "RNNN" must follow each GRIB code. These
indicate an accumulation interval, a single vertical level, a single pressure level, a range of pressure levels, a generic level, and a specific GRIB record number, respectively. "NNN" indicates the accumulation or level value."

It isn't obvious to me as pmsl is a surface field. I guess the same would apply to a Tmax or Tmin field? Do you just use P001, or L001?

thanks and regards
Marion

Hello Marion,

"PRMSL/Z0" should do the trick.

Here's why... if you look at the wgrib output for PRMSL, the level
value (in kpds7) is 0:
    2:427130:d=12040900:PRMSL:kpds5=2:kpds6=102:kpds7=0:TR=0:P1=30:P2=0:TimeU=1:MSL:30hr
fcst:NAve=0

Another example... looking at 2-m temperature, the level value is 2
(kpds7=2):
    6:2135652:d=12040900:TMP:kpds5=11:kpds6=105:kpds7=2:TR=0:P1=30:P2=0:TimeU=1:2
m above gnd:30hr fcst:NAve=0
So you'd want "TMP/Z2".

Another example... looking at 500 mb height, the level value is 500
(kpds7=500):
    165:47679226:d=12040900:HGT:kpds5=7:kpds6=100:kpds7=500:TR=0:P1=30:P2=0:TimeU=1:500
mb:30hr fcst:NAve=0
So you'd want "HGT/P500".

The the number after the slash matches the kpds7 value in wgrib
output. And the letter (A, P, Z, L, R) matches the level type:
'A' means you want an accumulation interval (i.e. for precip)
'P' means you want a pressure level
'Z' means you want a vertical level (i.e. meters above ground or cm
below ground)
'L' means you just want to match the level value and not worry
about the level type
'R' means you want a specific GRIB1 record number

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway
