[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #57993] History for MADIS data into MET

  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished compiling MET4.0.1 on my CentOS6.4 system using PGI Fortran.
I was able to compile everything except the PB2NC program, which gave link
errors. After having problems using a version of netCDF 4, I reverted to
the latest version 3 and everything seemed to compile and test OK.

I have started collecting the MADIS netCDF files. In MET, what file format
is required for input to the madis2nc program? The documentation seems to
indicate that one of the ASCII formats are required (".txt" in the sample
filename). However, there are several formatting options in the dump
programs so it's not clear to me how to create this file. I'm hoping I can
use the netCDF files and avoid wading through the MADIS software directory
and program structure.

Steve,

The madis2nc tool reads MADIS metar and raob NetCDF files. METv4.1
(due out in December) will also read MADIS profiler
and maritime NetCDF files. I'm not sure what the source of your MADIS
NetCDF files is, but I often grab them from NOAAs
FTP site. For example, the following set of commands will grab a
metar file and then convert it using madis2nc:

   wget ftp://pftp.madis-
data.noaa.gov/archive/2012/08/22/point/metar/netcdf/20120822_1200.gz
   gunzip 20120822_1200.gz; mv 20120822_1200 metar_20120822_1200.nc
   $MET_BASE/madis2nc metar_20120822_1200.nc
metar_20120822_1200_met.nc -type metar

Does this answer your question? ASCII files are not involved in the
MADIS conversion process in MET. Which
documentation are you citing when you say ".txt in the sample
filename"?

At the top of page 3.16 of the MET 4.0.1 user guide, the example of
the madis2nc call is given as:

madis2nc sample_madis_obs.txt sample_madis_obs.nc ....

I'm glad to hear that madis2nc uses the netCDF files.
