Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: NONE

I have been running Stat-Analysis on Point-Stat results we generated this
past summer. This proceeded well until I started noticing that the output
.txt files on the last couple of runs were 0-sized files which is
unexpected.

I have attached examples of Stat-Analysis log files which show the dialog
before and after. The after file shows a warning about "no matching stat
lines" after having read in and retained 1565906 stat lines.

I checked sample stat lines (.stat files) before and after and note no
obvious differences or problems.

The only change which I'm aware of which occurred between the two cases was
that our new MET V3.0 was compiled on OCT 7.

The processing of the "before" case which occurred on SEP 13 and the
processing for the "after" case on OCT 21.

Can you assist me in troubleshooting this?

Thanks.

John

John,

Sure, we're happy to help. I'm not sure what's going on. The problem
may exist in 1 of two places:
(1) Perhaps something's different about your runs of Point-Stat, and
you Point-Stat output has changed.
(2) Perhaps something's different about the STAT-Analysis job.

Ultimately, I think it'll be easiest if you just send me some sample
data to play with. Please execute the following commands and send me
this test data:

tar -cvzf before.tar.gz
MET_PointStat/results_m1o1_P2/*/point_stat_m1o1_P2_110000L*.stat
tar -cvzf after.tar.gz
MET_PointStat/results_m1o1_T3/*/point_stat_m1o1_T3_110000L*.stat

And then you can follow the instructions here for posting the
"before.tar.gz" and "after.tar.gz" files to our anonymous FTP site:
   http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp

Please let me know when the data is there, and I'll try to debug it.

Additional information on this problem.

When running Stat-Analysis on upper air data (AIRCFT), I noticed that
some of
the output .txt files contained results (not all were 0-sized). This
is
expected as AIRCFT data is sporadic.

I examined the attached log file and found instances where the 500
.stat files
were being processed (no WARNING) but a statement is output on
completion of
the processing of the 500th stat file which says
"DataLine::get_item(int) ->
range check error"

Further into the processing, there were instances where the same
WARNING
reported earlier occurred.

John

John -

Up to and including the processing I did on SEP 13, I know we were
using
METv2.0 for everything.

When I resumed processing on OCT 21 (after we compiled METv3.0 on OCT
7) I
believe that I was using METv3.0 and was running Stat-Analysis to
process the
same Point-Stat output I was working with back in SEP (produced using
METv2.0).

I tried to do this from my Linux system in the command line and it
doesn't
seem to recognize the -p option (unknown option). On my Windows
desktop, I
tried the same but I can't seem to connect (firewall maybe?) I've
submitted a
trouble ticket here to see what can be done.

The files are 2 mb each. Could I send these to you by email?

Thanks.

John,

Hmmm, I'm a bit confused. I took a look at all of the data you sent
me and it is all output from METv2.0. The first column in the .stat
output is the version number, and it contains "V2.0" in all
the output you sent me.

When I ran this data through the STAT-Analysis tool (both STAT-
Analysis version 2.0 and version 3.0), I get 20 matching lines each
time. You can see the attached script and output files.

So I'm not able to reproduce the problem you're seeing with the data
you sent me.

John

John -

Thanks for the testing.

I will try re-running Stat-Analysis using the same data using v2.0 to
see if
that changes anything.

I will let you know.

John

John,

Hmmm, I'm a bit confused. I took a look at all of the data you sent
me and it
is all output from METv2.0. The first column in the .stat output is
the
version number, and it contains "V2.0" in all the output you sent me.

When I ran this data through the STAT-Analysis tool (both STAT-
Analysis
version 2.0 and version 3.0), I get 20 matching lines each time. You
can see
the attached script and output files.

So I'm not able to reproduce the problem you're seeing with the data
you sent
me.

John
