Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
My co-worker and I have been trying to use the point-stat tool from MET. We've created a netcdf file using the madis2nc script successfully on some METAR data. However, we are having trouble reading this created file using the point-stat configuration. Attached is our configuration file we were using. We consistently received the error message below:
GSL_RNG_TYPE=mt19937
GSL_RNG_SEED=1304047950
Forecast File: wrfout_d01_2011-03-13_08:00:00
Climatology File: none
Configuration File: point_stat_config
Observation File: 20110313_0800.nc<http://20110313_0800.nc>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for WIND(*,*).
NetCDF: Attribute not found
Would we be able to get some insight into this issue? We are not sure if there is something wrong with the file itself, or there is something wrong with our configuration file. I've attached the madis netcdf file for you as well.
On one attempt, we entered parameters into the fcst_field and left the obs_field blank (as the manual say can be done). We got an error saying the obs_field cannot be blank. We used the same configuration file attached but with the obs_field blank.
Thanks for the help!

Bri,
I see that you're not currently a registered user of the MET software.
Prior to providing direct support in the use of
MET, we require that users fill out the free online registration form.
That enables us to ensure that we remain in
compliance with the international export laws of the United States.
To fill out the registration, just go here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/downloads/index.php
Enter you email address and hit enter to be taken to the form.
Once that is done, would it be possible to send me the model data file
that you are trying to verify using point_stat?
If the file is too large to send via email, you could upload it to our
FTP site by following the instructions here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp
Thanks,
Paul

Hey Paul,
I registered for the MET software. I also downloaded my data to your
ftp
site. It's under: incoming/irap/met_help/cote_data/
Thank you very much for the help,
Bri

Bri,
First, your model data appears to be WRF NetCDF output that is
staggered and on eta levels. MET can only read model
data that has been post-processed. We recommend using the Unified
Post Processor tool (UPP). See:
http://www.dtcenter.org/wrf-nmm/users/overview/upp_overview.php
Second, the wind observations in the obs file that you sent all appear
to be surface observations (message type ADPSFC),
and thus will not match model data at P850. However, you will be able
to verify surface wind speed, if that suits your
needs. To do so, use the following configuration file settings:
fcst_field [] = [ "WIND/Z10" ];
obs_field [] = [];
message_type [] = [ "ADPSFC" ];
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. I didn't know what the surface
identifier was so I left P850 as a place holder. I also did not know
that
MET could only read model data that has been post-processed.
Thanks for the speedy information!
