Hello,
What is significant about the MODE output files called either
*_fcst_merge.txt or *_obs_merge.txt that one gets when using engine
merging? I looked through both and they seem to look the same as, or very
similar to, the *_obj.txt file.

Subject: MODE fcst/obs_merge.txt files

Jeff,

Good question.

One of the configurable options in MODE is how to perform merging in
the fcst and obs fields. There are really 4 options available:
(1) Do no merging.
(2) Merge using the double threshold method.
(3) Merge using fuzzy logic by comparing the field to itself.
(4) Merge in the process of matching: if two objects in one field
match the same object in the other field, merge those two objects.

And these methods can be combined by choosing the right settings in
the config file. The output files to which you're referring are for
the fuzzy logic merging method. If you do that type of merging,
you'll get those output files and you'll get additional pages in the
postscript output depicting that fuzzy logic method.

The "fcst/obs_merge.txt" files does look very similar to the
"_obj.txt" file. However they describe the fuzzy logic output used
when comparing each field to itself. By default, those fuzzy logic
methods will inherit the settings you've specified in the MODE config
file, but you can actually pass a new set of config options to them
using the -config_merge command line argument. One thing you'll
notice in the output is that each object should match itself very,
very well (since it's comparing the field to itself)!

I don't imagine that you'd need to parse that output from MODE. I
doubt it'd be all that helpful. But we decided to write it out in
case anyone needs it.

Hope that helps.
