Good morning, and happy Thursday!

My colleague at NASEM is organizing this workshop in early May. She is
seeking graduate students, postdocs, and other early career scientists
(although
not exclusively) to participate in this workshop and to submit ideas and
insights. Deadline to submit ideas is April 20th. See the attached document
for more information. Feel free to share.

*Technology Developments to Advance Antarctic Research A Workshop |
National Academies*
<https://www.nationalacademies.org/our-work/technology-developments-to-advance-antarctic-research-a-workshop>

May 3, 4, 5, 2022 | 12:00–4:00 pm (EDT) each day | Held online (Virtual)

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you
to join a workshop to foster community-wide discussion about harnessing
cutting-edge technological innovations to *advance, facilitate, and
transform Antarctic and polar research; to increase the reach of Antarctic
and polar research while reducing the environmental footprint of these
operations; and to facilitate broader, more diverse participation in
Antarctic and polar research*.

While focused primarily on Antarctic science, the workshop will explore
lessons from, and solutions applicable to, Arctic science as well—and we
actively seek to draw insights from science and engineering fields beyond
polar science. As input to this workshop, we invite your creative ideas
regarding existing or possible new technologies that could be used for
advancing key aspects of Antarctic/polar research. [Submit by *April 20.* You
do not have to register for the workshop to submit ideas.]

New and improved technologies can help advance, expand, and transform
Antarctic research, by providing opportunities to carry out research more
efficiently, safely and reliably, and over a greater spatial/temporal
range, while minimizing costs and environmental impacts. In this
activity, a workshop will be organized to solicit insights and ideas from
within and beyond the Antarctic research community, regarding opportunities
for technological advances related to: observing systems for geological,
biological, atmospheric, cryospheric, oceanic environments; astronomy,
astrophysics, space weather research sensors; data and communications
technologies; electronics, batteries, and power systems for cold-weather
environments; and robotics and autonomous instrument engineering.
