Dear Postdocs and grad students,

Just a reminder to please join us tomorrow for this workshop!

*Writing a research statement** -* with Dr. Elizabeth Maroon
Thursday, Jan. 31st
9:00 - 10:00 am
FL1 - EOL Atrium* (correction: earlier I'd written FL3)*
NCAR Foothills Lab
3450 Mitchell Lane, Boulder
** Coffee and snacks will be provided **

*Action Item:*
Bring 3 copies of your research statement if you have one.

*Details:*
Dr. Elizabeth Maroon, a Project Scientist I at NCAR will be our guest. She
will be starting in an academic position at the University of Wisconsin
next year.

The workshop format will include a discussion on the topic followed by a
session of working in pairs or trios to review one or two research
statements. We will then have a reporting out and broader discussion with
the whole group about our findings.

I will provide research statements for the review, however if you have a
research statement that you would like some feedback on, please do bring
it. The more people you get feedback from, the better!

Here are a couple of resources for you:

1. SERC at Carleton University gives some brief tips on writing/reviewing
your research statement
<https://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/careerprep/jobsearch/research_statement.html>that
are useful.

2. Cornell University's website on writing research statements
<https://gradschool.cornell.edu/academic-progress/pathways-to-success/prepare-for-your-career/take-action/research-statement/>
has advice on a lot of different aspects, including layout, using bullets,
and things to include and to avoid.

3. This UCSF site includes a checklist/table of what to include
<https://career.ucsf.edu/sites/career.ucsf.edu/files/UCSF%20OCPD%20Checklist%20Faculty%20Materials.pdf>
in your research statement, depending on the type of institution you are
applying to, e.g. is it a teaching college, a master's-granting university,
or a PhD-granting university? (see p. 2).

If you know of other good resources, please let us know!

I hope that to see you there!

Val
