Faculty Announcement:
The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at The Pennsylvania
State University, on the University Park campus, invites applications for a
tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with interdisciplinary
expertise in the water cycle. We seek an inspired colleague who will
develop a successful research program, teach undergraduate and graduate
courses, and demonstrate commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.
Broadly, water-cycle research can focus on topics such as global and
regional atmospheric circulations, air-sea-ice-land interactions, and
biogeochemical processes, while using research methods such as remote
sensing, data assimilation, data analytics, and numerical modeling. A Ph.D.
in atmospheric science or a related discipline is required by the time of
hire. Demonstrated ability to conduct interdisciplinary research is highly
desired.

This position will support two thematic areas of the Penn State strategic
plan: ‘Driving Digital Innovation’ and ‘Stewarding our Planet’s Resources.’
As part of a cluster hire initiative of the Institute for Cyber Science
(ICS), the new hire should enhance big-data and computing-intensive
research and will have access to the Penn State high-performance research
cloud, a state-of-the-art computing facility, operated by The Institute for
Cyber Science (ICS). The new hire will also be a member of the Earth and
Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), a vibrant interdisciplinary
community within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the Penn
State Institutes of Energy and the Environment.

Applications should be submitted online and include (1) a cover letter, (2)
statements of research and teaching interests, (3) a curriculum vitae, (4)
evidence, either woven through their application materials, or as a
separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity,
equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates
an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.” (5) the names and
addresses of four references. Applications from women and
under-represented groups are strongly encouraged. While expecting to hire
at the Assistant Professor level, candidates with exceptional
qualifications may be considered at the Associate Professor rank. Review of
applicants will begin immediately, and applications received by November
15, 2018 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open
until filled. Further inquiries about the position may be directed to
Professor Chris Forest (ceforest at psu.edu).
