Sudha Krishnamurthy, BDS, PhD, and Juliana Vasco-Correa, PhD, are the new
International Officers appointed by the NPA. They are both excited to start
working with the NPA leadership team to improve the experience of
international postdoctoral scholars in the United States. International
postdocs constitute about more than 55 percent of the postdoctoral
population in the United States, and they face challenges related to
cultural adaptation, immigration requirements, and understanding the United
States academic system. The international officers work to address some of
these issues, develop resources to facilitate the experiences of
international postdocs, and advocate for policies that improve the

Since the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)
released their report on sexual harassment

in academia on June 12, 2018, the conversation surrounding the issue has
been growing. Among the recommendations made by NASEM was the
recommendation to consider primary investigator (PI) conduct when issuing
research funding. Since then, many postdocs have been waiting to see how
the major funding organizations would respond. In mid-September both the
National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Health

National Postdoctoral Association’s (NPA) National Postdoc Appreciation
Week (NPAW). In 2018, a record 410 events were hosted at 104 organizations
in 76 cities in 31 states. NPAW continues to grow beyond the United States,
with events being reported in Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Events included professional headshots for University of Nevada Reno
postdocs; complimentary stretching massage on the Scripps Research
Institute Jupiter campus; trivia night at The University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center; and a job search discussion at Cornell University. Other
popular events included symposiums, breakfasts, ice cream socials, and
happy hours.
