First off I would like to thank Arie and Alex for their patience when
the hardware crashed in the middle of our demonstration. Your
flexibility and participation is much appreciated.
In this demonstration, we spent the majority of time examining ESG's
search interface. This part of the system is controlled by Luca and
company. Here are some of the highlights:
1) Arie thought it would be useful to conduct more complex searches
such as "find all of the simulations where dataset = project and
simulation = topic". Right now in the search interface, you first
have to select one target and then select facets that modify that
resource. The above use case involves the desire to return a target
(simulation) but through the modification of another target (dataset).
2) Arie also thought that the free text option, without a list of
sample searches, would not be effective because users would not have
any idea a priori what items are searchable. The example was a search
on Forcing would return no results while a search on the values of any
Forcing instances in the system (e.g. volcanic, wind, green house
gases etc) would return results. The user has no way of knowing
this. To solve this problem, Arie suggested some explanatory text be
written on what the text search is supposed to look for.
Arie and Luca took this discussion offline and they may want to report
if other items were identified.
In review of Curator's trackback page the following items were
identified:
1) The need to provide definitions for all the controlled vocabulary.
This task has already been identified. The definitions of the
controlled vocabulary will have to be provided by Metafor and this
task will not be considered until after the questionnaire is complete
in early 2010.
2) Arie pointed out the same navigation issue that the participants of
the primary dry run noticed namely the need for a component navigation
mechanism. The Curator team is already brainstorming options to
achieve this.
