Thought it time for a quick status report.  Your comments and additions
are always welcome.   Glenn

   * Gen. Kelly (NWS) was briefed on the NOMADS and liked it, looking
     for more information.  NWS has requested to use NOMADS for a
     International Affairs (IA) project for third world access to models
     and data.  NWS requests to pass funds [~$600K] to NCDC/NOMADS, and
     pass to COLA to develop and implement the portable Eta, using
     NOMADS GDS and NCEP GDAS for initial / bndry conditions.  Will
     coordinate w/ NOAA procurement, COLA and NWS;
   * Tom Karl pushing NOMADS for next IPCC assessments;
   * the World Climate research Program (WCRP), Data Management group is
     also being briefed on NOMADS by Bryant McAvaney of BMRC (Australia)
     very soon (his white paper is attached);
   * Eric Guilyardi (European model coding framework called PRISM),
     requests and receives NOMADS collaboration;  FSL also joins as a
     "core NOAA collaborator".
   * Submitted a funding request to Bill Murray (NOAA-OGP) to conduct a
     NOMADS science workshop at NCDC this  Summer/Fall, to provide
     science oversight and develop data and system requirements for
     NOMADS.  No response as of yet.
   * Ron Stouffer (GFDL) this week suggests we brief NOAA on NOMADS.
     Ron states that within the new NOAA Strategic Plan, and its many
     references to limitations to data access, " NOAA needs NOMADS more
     than it knows".  I will develop a briefing package w/ NOMADS Team
     in the Spring.  COLA, NCEP, PMEL, and GFDL have already agreed to
     participate.  May add CDC, NCAR and LLNL if necessary or desired.
   * Steve Hankin to visit NCDC, GFDL, NCEP this week and next
     (depending snow storm track).  Providing training/discussion and
     briefing on NOMADS at NCDC and NCEP.
   * The NCDC NOMADS data port is now open at:
     http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov:9090/index.html and we are    ready to
     serve a limited set of RUC and Eta data.  I plan to advertise this
     link via NOMADS links, Unidata, NWS, etc. very soon and draft a
     BAMS paper next quarter.  Psbl issue with wind rotation, NCEP and
     Mike Fiorino (LLNL) assisting.
   * NOMADS Informational Page open internally at NCDC.  Finalize/open
     to public within two weeks.
