    Finally, I noticed a namespace clash (up to pluralisation) with
    (http://earthsciencesportal.gsfc.nasa.gov). I guess the GCMD guys will let
    us know if this becomes is a problem.

The URL you mention is a portal for the Earth Sciences Directorate at
Goddard.  While GCMD is part of that directorate and is listed in the
portal, it is not directly associated with GCMD.  I would think the
question is whether the similar name could confuse potential users. 
Also is there an interest in joining effort with this NASA effort at
some level.  I'm not sure how much this portal integrates the different
labs and groups.  It looks to me like more of a directory of Earth
Science Directorate projects.
