Funded PhD Positions in Coastal Resilience and Sediment Transport at Coastal Carolina University available for Spring/Fall 2027

The Department of Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) invites applications from motivated Ph.D. students interested in coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics, numerical modeling, and sediment transport.

The successful student will have the opportunity to work on a funded research project led by Dr. Till Hanebuth and Dr. Jinliang Liu at CCU in collaboration with US Army Corps of Engineers. The student will develop and apply high-resolution coastal ocean models to quantitatively assess localized bank erosion, changes in mud and sand deposition and shoaling and effects of anthropogenically altered hydrodynamics, and quantify the potential economic benefits and risks associated with tidal-flow restoration at a local habor in South Carolina.

At CCU, you'll have access to world-class facilities, interdisciplinary research opportunities, and a collaborative academic environment. Candidates are specifically welcome if your interests lie in a combination of fieldwork surveying and monitoring, computational modeling, or applied geo-engineering research. CCU provides the tools, mentorship, and resources to help you excel.

CCU is a growing institution with a strong legacy of excellence in marine sciences. The Department of Marine Science, one of the largest at CCU, offers diverse academic programs, including B.S. degrees in Marine Science and Marine Coastal Environmental Science, an M.S. in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies, and a Ph.D. in Marine Science. Students can also pursue minors in Marine Science, Environmental Science, and Coastal Geology. Our graduate program offers Graduate Assistantships with competitive stipends and in-state tuition or full tuition waiver as available.

The Gupta College of Science and Engineering at CCU provides an exceptional research environment with extensive field and computational resources. Its diverse fleet of research vessels, ranging from small skiffs to 50-foot aluminum vessels, offers valuable opportunities for hands-on coastal and marine research and the collection of high-resolution field data. In addition, recent upgrades to the university's High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure provide researchers with advanced computational capabilities for large-scale data analysis, numerical modeling, and simulation. The combination of field-based resources and modern computational infrastructure creates an ideal environment for integrating observational data, high-resolution coastal ocean models, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to address complex coastal processes and support data-driven scientific discovery.

Situated in Conway, South Carolina, just 15 km from the renowned vacation destination of Myrtle Beach, CCU offers an ideal environment for academic and personal growth. With over 11,000 students representing over 40 states and 50 countries, CCU combines a diverse and dynamic community with nationally and regionally recognized degree programs, including Ph.D. offering in Marine Science: Coastal and Marine Systems.

We encourage applicants from individuals with strong writing and communication skills and backgrounds in Marine Science, Civil/Environmental Engineering, and other related fields. Prior modeling experiences with FVCOM, SCHISM, Delft3D, ROMS or similar models are preferred.

Please contact Dr. Liu (jliu1 at coastal.edu<mailto:jliu1 at coastal.edu>) if you are interested. The graduate program application deadline for Spring 2027 is November 1, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
