Dear all,

I am recruiting one PhD student to start in Spring or Fall 2027 in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut (UConn). If you are looking for a PhD position in hydrology, and are interested in baseflow resilience and groundwater-surface water interactions under climate disturbances, I have a new project beginning Fall 2026, in collaboration with the USGS Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS)<https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/next-generation-water-observing-system-ngwos>, to predict baseflow across the headwaters within the Delaware River Basin, United States. You will be co-mentored by Dr. Martin Briggs<https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/martin-a-briggs> at the USGS Hydrologic Remote Sensing Branch.

Desired qualifications:

A strong background in groundwater modeling, with hands-on experience using tools such as MODFLOW, ATS (Advanced Terrestrial Simulator), ParFlow, or similar process-based hydrologic modeling software.

Experience in scientific programming (Python - preferred, R, Julia, or Matlab).
  *
Experience with machine learning, uncertainty quantification, Bayesian statistics, or geophysics/hydrology fieldwork is a plus, though not required.

Graduate students in UConn Earth Sciences receive funding through research and teaching assistantships, with continuous stipend support and possible additional summer funding, totaling $40k per year.
