The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites application for an Associate Research Scientist (ARS). The successful candidate will conduct research in paleoclimate and geochemistry in the Lamont Geochemistry Division to (a) develop a record and understanding of englacial weathering in deep Antarctic ice core samples through measurement of particle concentration and chemistry, (b) advance understanding of O2 consumption mechanisms in basal Antarctic ice and probing how these changes influence reconstructed atmospheric CO2 concentrations, (c) model plausible processes affecting observed O2 loss/depletion using Rayleigh fractionation models. Basic responsibilities include developing routine methods for imaging and chemical analysis of sediment/dust entrained in ice and applying these methods to a variety of archives. The Associate Research Scientist will mentor students and junior scientists, write scientific papers, and write grant proposals to develop novel research in the field of paleoclimate and ice core research. Attend conferences and workshops. Interact and advance collaborations with external scientists.
Duties and Responsibilities include:

  *   Conduct research in paleoclimate and ice core science.
  *   Develop manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  *   Share and communicate results by assembling presentations for group meetings, writing conference abstracts.
  *   Assistant with maintenance and operations of clean lab and mass spectrometry facilities.
  *   Under the general supervision of the Assistant Professor and P.I., the ARS will exercise independent judgement and initiative and oversee the supervision of others in data compilation, documentation, ingestion into databases, development of research questions and direction.
  *   Will share some responsibility for budgets pertaining to purchases and travel.

Qualifications
Ph.D. in Earth/Environmental Sciences or related field and minimum of 3-5 years' experience in ice core paleoclimate research. Must demonstrate experience in scientific data management and project management. The successful candidate should be organized and efficient, be able to conduct original, independent scientific research, work well within a team, and communicate the results of their research or research activities effectively both orally and in writing.
The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
Initial appointment will be for one year with continuation dependent on funding and research progress.

Starting salary range: $80,000-$85,000 depending on prior research experience.
