Funded Masters Opportunity at Towson University: research-track MS Environmental Science (Geology/Tectonics focus)
Interested in travelling to southern Brazil to study rocks interpreted as remnants of 1 billion-year-old oceanic lithosphere, while pursuing a funded MS in Environmental Science at Towson University?
We are seeking a self-motivated student to conduct a research and geologic mapping project focusing on Neoproterozoic ultramafic-mafic rocks that form part of the São Gabriel Block in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). The successful candidate will combine detailed geologic mapping with petrography, bulk-rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry, with the goal of interpreting the tectonic origin(s) of the studied rocks and using the findings to place constrains on the tectonic evolution of the São Gabriel Block.
Advised by Dr. George Guice (Towson University), Dr. Vinícius Tieppo Meira (University of Campinas) and Dr. Giuseppe Betino de Toni (Federal University of Pampa), you will develop skills in field geology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, and tectonics. You will be trained in modern geologic mapping and rock preparation techniques, and use several analytical methods, including: scanning electron microscopy; electron microprobe analysis; x-ray fluorescence; and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.
Anticipated start date: Spring 2027 or Summer 2027.
Salary and Funding
The successful candidate will be funded on a 2-year scholarship, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This scholarship includes a tuition waiver for 2 years, in addition to an annual stipend of approximately $21,000.
TU's Environmental Science (ENVS) Program
To graduate with an MS (thesis-track) in Environmental Science from Towson University, you must complete 30 credits of coursework. In addition to the 6 credits directly associated with your thesis, you will complete 24-25 credits of Environmental Science classes during your 2 years at TU. You will choose 3 topics from the following list of core areas: Environmental Geology; Ecosystem Ecology; Environmental Chemistry; Environmental Law, Policy and Education. In addition, you will take 2 bespoke electives designed to prepare you for your research, as well as 1-2 electives of your choice. A list of degree requirements and potential electives can be found here<https://catalog.towson.edu/graduate/degree-certificate-programs/jess-mildred-fisher-science-mathematics/environmental-science-ms/#requirementstext> (see "thesis option").
About you:
The successful candidate will have:
* A bachelors degree in geology, geoscience, earth science or related degree (if you are scheduled to graduate in Winter 2026 or Spring 2027, you are very welcome to apply!).
* Prior fieldwork experience.
* Skills in Mineralogy, Petrology and Structural Geology.
* Strong motivation and organization skills.
The following skills are also desirable:
* Prior experience with GIS software (e.g., ARC-GIS; Q-GIS) and/or graphics software (e.g., Inkscape; Illustrator; CorelDRAW).
* Prior experience using excel and/or a coding language (e.g., R, Python).
*
Prior research experience.
The application process:
Applications are only open to US citizens, US permanent residents or foreign nationals with a valid visa.
To apply, please send a CV, cover letter and copy of your unofficial university transcript (including classes taken and grade) to Dr. George Guice (GGUICE at TOWSON.EDU) by Wednesday October 21 @ 11:59 PM EDT. Please include the names and email addresses of 2 academic references in your CV.
Interviews will take place via. Zoom during the first 2 weeks of November. We hope to extend an offer to our preferred candidate in early December. The successful applicant will need to formally apply to the MS Environmental Science program<https://catalog.towson.edu/graduate/degree-certificate-programs/jess-mildred-fisher-science-mathematics/environmental-science-ms/#requirementstext> (application fee: $50), but this should only be done after being notified that they are our preferred candidate. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact George Guice (GGUICE at TOWSON.EDU).
