Dear colleagues,
(Sorry for cross posting.)
We are inviting applications for *two fully funded 4-year PhD positions* in
sea-level science at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City
University of Hong Kong, to start in either* Spring or Fall 2027 *under the
supervision of Dr Yucheng Lin (yc-lin.com). Please consider forwarding this
to anyone who may be interested.
*Research projects can be determined* depending on mutual interest of
students and supervisor. Potential projects (include but are not limited
to):
· *Sea-Level Projections and Climate Risk* — Quantifying future sea-level
change and its uncertainties by combining ice-sheet/ocean models, remote
sensing, and in-situ observations with machine learning and Bayesian
methods.
· *Paleoclimate and Sea-Level Change* — Reconstructing sea-level and
climate over centennial to millennial timescales using geological proxies,
Bayesian spatio-temporal models, and numerical simulations.
· *Coastal–Human Interactions* — Examining how past sea-level change
shaped coastal societies in history and/or how future rise will affect them.
*Funding*
Both positions are fully funded through the CityU PhD Studentship:
approximately HK$19,100/month (Basic Rate), rising to ~HK$19,600/month
after passing the Qualifying Examination. Exceptional candidates will be
nominated for the *Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)
<https://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html> *, currently HK$28,400/month.
*Requirements*
· Master or Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline (e.g.,
geophysics, oceanography and atmospheric science, remote sensing,
statistics, data science, econometrics, or other related fields).
· Strong interest in research and demonstrated self-motivation.
· Solid quantitative and programming background; proficiency in at
least one programming language (preferably Python).
· For applicants whose previous degree was not taught in English,
TOEFL/IELTS scores meet CityU's admission requirements.
· Applicants will have to go through a centralized admission process
through CityUHK with Dr Lin's recommendation.
