We have two openings for a PhD and a PostDoc position at Lund University
to work on CH4 wetlands emissions modelling at Lund University, see the
announcement below. Please get in touch with
me(marko.scholze at mgeo.lu.se)if you have any questions.
*Two Vacancies at Lund University, Sweden:
1) PhD position in modelling CH4 emission from tropical wetlands
2) PostDoc position in CH4 data assimilation
*
The Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation and Inverse Modelling group at the
Department of Earth and Environmental Science has a PhD and a Postdoc
openings for candidates with a strong background in Physical Geography
and Ecosystems Analysis, Atmospheric sciences, Environmental
Engineering, Mathematics or Physics.
The Inverse Modelling group operates and further develops the regional
LUMIA inverse modelling framework estimating both CO2 and CH4 fluxes
from atmospheric observation. We also operate the Carbon Cycle Data
Assimilation System that quantifies sources and sinks of carbon dioxide
through the assimilation of observational data. We are closely
collaborating with the LPJ-GUESS modelling group and the ICOS Carbon
Portal (hosted by the Department of Earth and Environmental Science)that
develops operational data products and services building on ICOS
observations for analysing carbon fluxes within Europe.
Both positions are embedded in the IM4CA EU research project
(https://im4ca.eu) that aims to to establish the scientific fundament
needed to understand and mitigate the climate forcing of methane by
delivering knowledge and data on the regional and global sources and
sinks of atmospheric methane.
1) *The PhD student* will further develop and apply the wetlands module
in the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to improve the
quantification of CH4 emissions from tropical wetlands. The student will
gain research experience in state-of-the-art ecosystem modelling, model
optimisation, and presenting and publishing the results.
This is a 4-year fully-funded PhD position at Lund University, Sweden
with a preferred start in summer 2026. The PhD student will be
supervised by Marko Scholze and Paul Miller (both Dept. of Earth and
Environmental Scienc) and be able to work in an international team with
world-leading scientists in the area of CH4 emissions quantification.
For more information about the PhD project and on how to apply see
https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:896147/
2) *The postdoctoral researcher* will work on developing and applying a
methane data assimilation system, CH4DAS. The CH4DAS will be based on
the LUMIA regional inversion system coupled with a model of boreal
wetlands CH4 emissions. The postdoc will develop and apply the CH4 data
assimilation systems together with the IM4CA project partners as well as
international collaborators.
The positionwill be available for 24 months, with a preferred starting
date of June 2026.
For more information about the postdoc project and on how to apply see

Closing date for both positions is 19 April 2026.
