Research in Climate Model Emulation in the Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) at Princeton University

The AOS Program and the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System seek an energetic and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in global atmosphere and coupled atmosphere-sea ice-ocean machine learning modeling research. This effort will elucidate how internal variability in recently developed machine learning models (i.e., climate model emulators) compares to physical models on decadal and longer timescales.

The individual will join a vigorous research team with Timothy Merlis (Princeton University), Mitch Bushuk (Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, GFDL), and Alistair Adcroft (Princeton University) with others at Princeton University and GFDL and external collaborators. Available resources include world-class high-performance computing platform and an exceptional intellectual community of atmospheric and oceanic science researchers.

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in the climate sciences (atmospheric science, oceanography), applied math, or related physical science disciplines. Rigorous training in atmospheric and oceanic sciences is preferred, along with a strong modeling background and/or observational experience (e.g., large datasets such as satellite data). Candidates with familiarity with machine learning and strong skills in statistical analysis are encouraged to apply. Positions at the rank of Postdoctoral Research Associate rank are for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding.
Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter, CV, a publication list, a statement of research experience and interests, and names of at least 3 letters of recommendation. Applicants should apply online at https://apply.interfolio.com/187243. Review of applications will begin as soon as they are received and continue until the position is filled. This position is subject to the University’s background check policy. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B visa requiring consular processing; other visa sponsorships (including H-1B visas not requiring consular processing) may be available, as appropriate.
