I am seeking motivated MSc and PhD students to join my new research group<http://clesk.github.io> in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at UQAM, located in Montréal, Canada. Research in the group focuses on climate change and its impacts on agriculture and water resources, using statistical and processed-based modeling to examine, among other topics:

  * Dynamics of precipitation intensification and water-cycle amplification under warming
  * Climate change impacts on global agriculture and land-surface water availability
  *
Role of vegetation in land-atmosphere interactions

Position details:

  * External funding to support students is currently pending, but I expect to recruit students over the coming year.
  * I am happy to work with prospective students to apply for external fellowships (e.g. FRQNT MSc<https://frq.gouv.qc.ca/en/program/masters-research-scholarships-2026-2027-b1-regular-component-and-re-entering-research-component/>/PhD<https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://frq.gouv.qc.ca/app/uploads/2025/08/regles_bourses_doctorat_2026-2027_ang.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjd7aKFpa-SAxXxKlkFHfqFE-0QFnoECCEQAQ&usg=AOvVaw36UWpT7rK5gayc-qQIC1YS> for Québec residents, NSERC MSc<https://nserc-crsng.canada.ca/en/funding-opportunity/canada-graduate-research-scholarship-masters-program>/PhD<https://nserc-crsng.canada.ca/en/funding-opportunity/canada-graduate-research-scholarship-doctoral-program> for Canadian residents).
  * Typical stipend of CA$20-40k per year, depending on degree level and funding source.
  * Start dates are flexible, ranging from Summer 2026 through Winter 2027.

Qualifications:

  * Strong quantitative background (physical geography, Earth sciences, atmospheric science, hydrology, environmental science, or related fields).
  * An MSc is required for admission to our PhD program.
  * French language proficiency is required for the MSc program<https://etudier.uqam.ca/programme?code=1812>, but not for the PhD program<https://etudier.uqam.ca/programme?code=3141>.
  * Interest in climate, hydrology, process-based modeling, and/or data analysis.
  * Programming experience (Python, R, MATLAB) or modeling skills are an asset.

How to apply / express interest:
Please send a brief CV and a short statement of research interests to: lesk.corey at uqam.ca<mailto:lesk.corey at uqam.ca>.
I’m happy to chat informally about potential projects and funding options. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.
