Dear colleagues,
I am recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to join the Convection & Climate Group in the Department of Geophysics at Stanford University. Our group studies the physical principles governing the organization of moist convection and atmospheric circulations across scales, including convective aggregation, tropical cyclones, the Madden–Julian Oscillation, and atmospheric rivers, with a broader interest in climate dynamics. We combine theory, observations, a hierarchy of numerical models, and machine-learning methods to understand their formation, dynamics, and predictability. More information about our group is available at https://www.yang-climate-group.org/.
The successful candidate will have substantial freedom to develop an independent research direction. The start date is flexible, from as early as October 1, 2026 to as late as fall 2027. Please see the attached announcement for details.
To submit your application, please complete the following form: https://tinyurl.com/4fu7jy7m. Note that the following materials will be required: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, and (3) the names and contact information of three references. We will begin reviewing applications on September 15, 2026, and the position will remain open until filled.
Stanford also offers several prestigious and exciting postdoctoral fellowship opportunities, including:
Thompson Postdoctoral Fellowship (due on Oct. 1): https://geophysics.stanford.edu/thompson-postdoctoral-fellowship
Stanford Science Fellowship (check website for updated deadline): https://stanfordsciencefellows.stanford.edu/apply
Stanford Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship (due on Oct. 1): https://energypostdoc.stanford.edu/
Data Science Fellowship (check website for updated deadline): https://datascience.stanford.edu/programs/data-science-fellows
As some of the fellowship deadlines are approaching, I encourage interested candidates to reach out to me soon so that we can discuss potential research directions and develop a proposal or research statement together.
I am also recruiting Ph.D. students this fall and particularly welcome students with strong backgrounds in mathematics, physics, computer science, and other quantitative fields who are interested in atmospheric dynamics, convection, climate, and related problems. Prospective students are very welcome to contact me directly to discuss research interests and potential opportunities in the group.
Please feel free to share this announcement with students, postdocs, or others who may be interested.
Best,
Da
