I am writing to share with you information about the Biomedical & Environmental Health Sciences PhD Program at American University. The website includes links to each department, more information about the program, and information on how to apply. If you are interested, please visit the website at: https://www.american.edu/cas/bio-chem-environment-phd/, or contact the program director, Dr. Connaughton at vconn at american.edu<mailto:vconn at american.edu>.

A brief overview of our program:
In American University’s PhD Program in Biomedical and Environmental Health Sciences, you will develop the cross-disciplinary expertise to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges - from infectious diseases to food security, climate change, clean water, and more - and to transform your research into solutions that benefit society.

Addressing these issues requires deep scientific-based research that furthers policies informed by science. Our PhD program prepares you to bridge chemistry, environmental science, and biology with a focus on turning science into policies with impact.

Each year, we offer five fully funded (tuition, stipend) fellowships for four years. Students can apply with either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and taking the GRE is optional. Applicants at all career stages are welcome.

Deadline: January 15, 2026
