Dear colleagues,
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at
Mānoa invites applications for a *2-year Postdoctoral Researcher* position
as part of *Change Hawai‘i (HI)*, an NSF-funded, university-wide initiative
that uses an interdisciplinary and data-driven approach to address
environmental challenges in Hawai‘i and other tropical islands. The
research will focus on fundamental questions about tropical island climate,
including how soil moisture-precipitation feedbacks and land-atmosphere
interactions influence rainfall, how islands shape the organization of deep
convection, and how island size affects the emergence of local weather
systems. Within this broad context, the researcher will be encouraged to
shape the trajectory of the project according to their interests.
*Responsibilities*
- Run state-of-the-art cloud-resolving models (e.g., CM1, SAM) on UH’s
high-performance computing system (Koa).
- Conduct idealized simulations of tropical island climates and
convective systems.
- Analyze numerical simulations and observational data.
- Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present results at
scientific meetings.
*Minimum Qualifications*
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related field.
- 1-3 years of research experience with numerical modeling of
atmospheric processes.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Fortran, C, or C++).
- Solid knowledge of atmospheric convection and climate dynamics.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
*Preferred Qualifications*
- Experience with HPC environments and large datasets.
- Research background in deep convection and island climates.
- Familiarity with Lagrangian particle models and diagnostic techniques.
*Application Process*
Applicants must apply online via the RCUH website
<https://www.rcuh.com/opportunities/job-openings/> (Job ID# 225504).
Required materials:
1. Cover letter
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Name and contact information for three professional references
4. Copy of degree(s)/transcript(s)/certificate(s)
*Closing date*: October 21, 2025, or until the position is filled.
*Inquiries*: Dr. Giuseppe Torri (gtorri at hawaii.edu).
With best regards,
Giuseppe
