Hi all,

The Geology Program at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA is seeking to hire a permanent, full-time faculty member who will significantly contribute to both the geology and environmental science undergraduate programs offered within the department. The area of specialty is open, but strong preference will be given to candidates whose area of specialty touches on at least one of the following areas: Paleontology, GIS, and/or Structural Geology.

The expected teaching duties will be 24 credits/year (~3-2 teaching load) and could include introductory courses as well as upper-level courses in the broad areas of geology and environmental science (e.g., Structure, Paleontology, GIS, or Geomorphology). Our class sizes are small and field-based learning is encouraged and supported; opportunities to lead domestic and international travel courses with students are also available. Research with undergraduate students is expected and supported. The university’s location in a glacially modified region along the shore of Lake Erie and the edge of the Appalachian Basin provide abundant opportunities for integration into one’s teaching and research.

The anticipated start date for this position is August 15th, 2026. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD, but candidates who are ABD or have an MS degree in an appropriate area of study will also be considered. Previous experience teaching and working with diverse student populations is a plus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include teaching introductory and upper-division geology undergraduate courses. In addition to pursuing teaching excellence, faculty are expected to engage in scholarly research, particularly involving undergraduate students, and participate in academic advising and service to the department, school, and university.

QUALIFICATIONS

  *   At a minimum, the candidate will have a Masters Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. A Ph.D. is preferred and required for a tenure-track position. ABD candidates may be considered with the expectation of degree completion within one year of hire.
  *   Experience with laboratory instruction, course development, and using innovative, student-centered pedagogies.
  *   Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  *   Expertise in areas that complement or expand the existing strengths of the department.
  *   Skills in using educational technology and modern instructional techniques.
  *   Desire to mentor undergraduate students in research or professional development.

Additional Preferences for Consideration

  *   Experience teaching both geology and environmental science courses.
  *   Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and/or research, especially in alignment with a liberal arts curriculum.
  *   Evidence of an active research program with potential for undergraduate involvement. Ability to secure external funding is a plus.
  *   Experience working in and teaching GIS.
