Postdoctoral Researcher Position on Southern Ocean Overturning and Carbon
The University of Maryland, College Park is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the UMD Oceanography Group to investigate the connection between the Southern Ocean overturning and the carbon budget. This project will be in the group of Prof. Madeleine Youngs in collaboration with Prof. Mukund Gupta from TU Delft.
The researcher will contribute to a project aimed at better understanding the localized nature of carbon outgassing in the Southern Ocean. They will make use of the Biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate (B-SOSE) at eddy-rich resolution to study the three-dimensional overturning circulation and the role of bathymetry in carbon transport and air-sea exchanges. Analysis tools will include a combination of isopycnal budgets and Lagrangian particle tracking The researcher will also have opportunities to mentor undergraduate students. .
This position is to begin as soon as possible and is expected to be 2 years of duration, subject to availability of NSF funding. The position will be in person in College Park, Maryland, with all that the metropolitan DC region has to offer.
Interested applications should contact Prof. Youngs for questions. To apply please submit a short statement of research interest (1 page), a CV, and contact information for 3 references to Prof. Youngs (myoungs at umd.edu). Review will begin on November 15th 2025 until the position is filled.
