Optimising Marine Cloud Brightening Scenarios for Regional Cooling: A Next-Generation Coupled Modelling Study of Aerosol-Cloud-Radiation Interactions
The Project
We are seeking an exceptional PhD candidate to join an international research team at the forefront of marine cloud brightening (MCB) research, with a focus on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia.
This project will optimise and evaluate a next-generation, high-resolution coupled atmosphere-ocean model ACCESS-EMS-GBR to assess the potential efficacy and risks of MCB as a regional climate intervention strategy. The model enables simulation of MCB scenarios at spatial and temporal scales not achievable with global models, allowing for detailed assessments of sea spray aerosol injection strategies.
These simulations will explore the direct and indirect effects of MCB on cloud properties, precipitation, and radiative forcing, with the goal of identifying optimal deployment parameters (e.g. timing, location, emission rates) to maximise cooling benefits while minimising environmental and operational risks.
Candidate Profile
We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in atmospheric science, climate modelling, or environmental systems.
Essential qualifications and skills:
* A strong Honours or Master's degree (or equivalent) in a numerical discipline such as atmospheric science, physics, applied mathematics, chemistry, engineering, or a related field
* Programming experience in Python, R, or similar languages
* Working with large datasets (e.g. atmospheric, cloud microphysical, or remote sensing data)
* Environmental or climate data analysis
Location
This PhD position is based at Southern Cross University (SCU), Australia, with supervision from leading researchers at SCU and at CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. The successful candidate will also collaborate with international partners, contributing to a globally significant research effort.
You will be based at the National Marine Science Centre (NMSC) in Coffs Harbour, on the east coast of Australia. Coffs Harbour offers an exceptional natural environment, with pristine beaches, world-class surf, and lush forests of the Great Dividing Range, an ideal setting for both research and lifestyle.
How to Apply
To apply, please submit the following documents:
* A cover letter outlining your interest in the project and your suitability for the role
* Your CV
* A copy of your academic transcript
* The names and contact details of two academic referees
Please send your application to Ceylena.Holloway at scu.edu.au
Warm regards,
Ceylena Holloway
