Available Fully Funded MS and PhD Positions

We have 5 to 6 MS and 1 to 2 PhD student positions, which are fully funded
and to be filled for the coming 2026/2027 academic year in the Division of
Environmental & Industrial Hygiene in the Department of Environmental &
Public Health Sciences (DEPHS), College of Medicine, University of
Cincinnati.
About the Program

The Division offers MS and PhD programs in Environmental & Industrial
Hygiene and related areas focused on anticipation, recognition, evaluation,
and control of environmental and occupational exposures that affect human
health. Students receive rigorous training that combines coursework,
laboratory and field research, and professional development, preparing them
for careers in academia, government, industry, and consulting.
Research Themes

Students will have opportunities to work on projects that may include, but
are not limited to:

·        *Aviation and transportation emissions:*

·        Emissions from aircraft, ground support equipment, and airport
operations

·        Health and exposure of ground crews and nearby communities

·        *Occupational Health and Safety in the Aviation Industry:*

·        Occupational health and safety motivation in training, emerging
extended reality (XR) and eye tracking technologies in observational
research and interventions to improve occupational health and safety
training in the aviation industry

·        *Indoor air quality, ventilation, and building environments:*

·        Indoor air pollution in homes, workplaces, and transportation hubs

·        Effectiveness of ventilation systems, filtration, and air cleaners

·        Exposure mitigation and intervention studies

·        *Aerosol science and exposure assessment:*

·        Sampling and characterization of chemical and biological aerosols

·        Relationships between exposures, internal dose markers, and health
outcomes

·        *Occupational health and industrial hygiene:*

·        Anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace
hazards

·        Ergonomics, biomechanics, and worker performance

·        *Personal protective equipment and control technologies:*

·        Development and evaluation of respirators, masks, and other PPE

·        Source control and engineering controls for indoor and
occupational environments

·        *Ergonomics and healthcare:*

·        Evaluation of physical and cognitive demands in clinical
environments

·        Prevention of musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers

·        Design of safer patient-handling and workflow systems

Additional projects in environmental sciences, environmental/occupational
epidemiology, and exposure–disease relationships are also possible,
depending on student background and interests.
Position Description

Admitted MS and PhD students will:

·        Conduct laboratory and/or field research within one or more of the
research themes above

·        Analyze data and co-author peer-reviewed publications

·        Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of faculty, postdocs,
and students

·        Present findings at scientific meetings and seminars

·        Complete graduate coursework in environmental and occupational
health, industrial hygiene, and related areas

Competitive graduate assistantships (research and/or teaching), which may
include stipend and tuition support, are expected to be available for
qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents, subject to funding
and admission to the program.
Desired Background

We welcome applicants with training in one or more of the following:

·        Environmental sciences / environmental health

·        Occupational health & safety / industrial hygiene

·        Chemistry, physics, or engineering

·        Aerosol science, atmospheric or environmental engineering

·        Biology or related life sciences

·        Ergonomics

·        Healthcare

Preferred qualifications include:

·        Strong laboratory and/or field research skills

·        Experience in data analysis (e.g., JMP, R, Python, MATLAB, or
similar)

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·        Ability to work both independently and in a team

·        Evidence of research experience (thesis, publications, or
presentations)
