The Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Lab at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a funded, full-time PhD position or postdoctoral scholar to join our research team.
Position Overview:
This opportunity offers an exciting chance to investigate aerosol chemistry in both the boreal forest environment of interior Alaska and the unique urban winter conditions in Fairbanks. Two primary research directions are envisioned:
Boreal Forest Aerosol Chemistry: Field studies at the Delta Junction site <https://ascent.research.gatech.edu/delta-junction>, conducted in close collaboration with researchers from the University of Helsinki, Finland, comparing North American and European boreal forest measurements.
Urban Sulfur Aerosol Chemistry: Deployment and operation of a newly acquired Aerodyne TOF-ACSM-X instrument <https://aerodyne.com/wp-content/uploads/TOF-ACSM-X.pdf>and other aerosol instruments in downtown Fairbanks to investigate changes in aerosol sulfur chemistry following recent reductions in sulfur emissions.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct and support field measurements, including instrument operation, maintenance, and calibration.
• Analyze and interpret atmospheric aerosol data, with an emphasis on aerosol composition, particle growth and source attribution.
• Collaborate actively with international research partners.
Qualifications:
We're seeking candidates with a strong background in atmospheric aerosol and/or mass spectrometry measurements. Whether you're a seasoned postdoctoral scholar or an ambitious PhD candidate, if you're passionate about unraveling the complexities of atmospheric chemistry, we want to hear from you!
Interested applications should email a curriculum vitae and a paragraph describing their research interests to Dr. Jingqiu Mao (jmao2 at alaska.edu <http://alaska.edu/>). The position can start as soon as the summer of 2025. Please contact me immediately if you are interested.
